Since the year is almost over (FINALLY! ), I thought I'd start a thread for people to share their thoughts on the best releases this year (so far) and releases that are still to come that we're looking forward to. Then maybe during the last week of December, we can all make our final list? You can list as many as you want! My top 7 of 2009 (so far and in no particular order!) :Charlotte Martin "Piano Trees" Charlotte Martin "Rarities .6" Carina Round "Things You Should Know" Neko Case "Middle Cyclone" Florence + The Machine "Lungs" A Fine Frenzy "Bomb in A Birdcage" The Art of Time Ensemble Featuring Sarah Slean "Black Flowers" Tori Amos "Midwinter Graces" Upcoming releases I'm looking forward to :John Mayer "Battle Studies" Annie "Don't Stop" ETA : Added Midwinter Graces to my love list.

I hope you do! If not I am sure someone will record it and put it on YouTube. I'm nervous/excited to hear the new material.

I haven't listened to it in full yet! "Who Says", right? I heard a 1 minute clip a while back and didn't like it too much, but I rarely like his first single from the record (I hate WOTWTC but LOVE most of Continuum). I read on MSM that the owner of the board who interviewed John yesterday, listened to the album in full and he said it was his most diverse sounding album to date, so that really got my interests up quite a bit.

1- The Crying Light (Antony & The Johnsons) 2- Strict Joy (The Swell Season) 3- Nerina Pallot (The Graduate) Biggest disappointment: David Gray (Draw the Line) This year I've bought lots of albums... but not new (2009) albums... I've discovered lots and lots of new artists that went under my radar when originally out. So all my fav albums of the year are in fact from the last 2-5 years including... Rachael Yamagata - Elephants Rachael Yamagata- Happenstance Laura Marling- Alas I Cannot Swim Sara Lov- Seasoned eyes were beamed William Fitzsimmons- Until when we are ghosts William Fitzsimmons- Goodnight William Fitzsimmons- The sparrow and the crow David Ford- Songs for the road David Ford- I sincerely apologize for all the trouble I caused Angus & Julia Stone-A Book Like This Alexi Murdoch- Time without consequence Nerina Pallot- Dear frustrated superstar Nerina Pallot- Fires

^ouch forgot AATS, should add it to the best too don't you think that these days we're having better music than ever? I mean, compared to the 80s, 90s, early 00s... I think it's cos of the internet/myspace and all, musicians can put their music up there without needing a big record company to support, and we all can choose what we wanna listen to, we don't need to listen to what radios want us to/ end of rambling

Marti - I mean to do that as well! To ask people to post albums that were not released this year, but that they discovered this year and love. Doh.
♥ So glad you're into Rachael now! She is so damn underrated. "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" didn't do well at all in the U.S. and it's just a masterpiece IMO.
I think you're right -- it's more about our access to the music than the music itself. There's always been great music being made, but it's easier than ever to find it, either through downloading it on a whim or finding it on some random site being discussed. I know Last.Fm has helped me find many artists. I probably never would have heard of My Brightest Diamond, for instance, if she hadn't been recommended to me through that site and I absolutely love her.

I absolutely ADORE Rachael Yamagata!!!!!! and I even managed to see her live in London in this tiny venue for like 50 people!!!! Can't believe I discovered her after hearing one of her songs in Brothers & Sisters Most of the artists I've discovered in the last years it's cos of TV shows like Grey's Anatomy (which also played Rachael's Brown Eyes last week) or recommended by friends... ohhh I have to check this Carina Round, think I heard something that I really liked...

Carina is amazing. ♥ I first read about her here, either from Sid or Saar. All of her albums are wonderful (and each is very different).
I don't know why Rachael isn't more popular! It's annoying. I really thought "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" would be her breakout album.
