My name is Ryan, I'm 32, and I've been a fan of Tori's since I was 16 and I first heard Boys for Pele.
I grew up in a rural town of about 8,000 people. We didn't have MTV and all of the radio stations were either country or metal. Somehow, though, I had heard "Silent All These Years" when it became popular. I loved it immediately, but it was rare that I heard it and it took me a while to find out who sang it, since this was well before the Internet. Eventually, I came across a few articles about Tori in different magazines. Even though all I had heard was bits and pieces of one song, once I read about her, I was craving to hear more of what she had created.
Eventually Boys for Pele was released and I was able to get a copy. The first song I listened to was "Horses" and I was blown away. Now 15 years later, it is still my favorite song and Boys for Pele is my favorite CD.
For the rest of my teens and into my early 20's, I rarely listened to anything but Tori. This ended up causing problems after I married as my wife hated Tori's music. She was jealous of any female I showed interest in, so to try and be a good husband, I got rid of all 35-ish of my Tori cds. For the next five years, I didn't listen to Tori at all. When I got divorced, one of the things that really helped me deal with and get through that time was rediscovering Tori's music. Boys for Pele, especially "Putting the Damage On," was played constantly. And I got to discover Scarlet, the Beekeeper, and all the b-sides from the Piano box at once. Just a couple of months after my divorce was finalized, American Doll Posse came out. I remember waking up that morning, feeling that same excitement I had as a teenager when the day came for Choirgirl or Venus to be released.
I'm remarried now and in an infinitely happier and healthier relationship. My wife now was aware of Tori before me, but didn't know anything other than "Crucify" and "Silent All These Years." Even though she still doesn't get into Tori's music, she will listen with me anytime I want. The past two years, we've listened to Midwinter Graces while putting up our Christmas tree and decorations.
One of the happiest nights of my life was July 24, 2009, when my wife and I saw Tori in concert. I had been able to see Tori in concert once before during the Plugged tour, but to be able to share that experience with my wife, who is without doubt my best friend in the world, was amazing.
This kind of turned into a longer and more rambling introduction than I had initially planned on writing, but I'm really excited to be a part of this site
