Has anyone been listening to new albums/songs lately? I've been hearing interesting things about a two-piece called The Kills (apparently with PJ influence) so I'm going to have a listen to their stuff soon. Also, Elephant by the White Stripes! My fave radio station is featuring this album this week so my ears have been blessed with these awesomely stripped-back sounds, edgy, sproradic beats and a howling voice. I'm very impressed so far with "The hardest button to button" and something about a doctor/medication song? Anyway, if you want to share something, some beauty, something rare or new.... let me know about it! xxx

Well lately, I listened to a lot of PM3's and some bootlegs from the Scarlet's Walk Tour (Tori)... ;D But I'm planning to buy the new Placebo and the new Moloko... I really like the new song of Moloko.. I like them. It's just music I play when I feel like dancing and when I feel happy and want to move my arse! ;D I have already an album of theirs. Hmmm otherwise maybe the new one of the White Stripes... will see!

Yeah I wanna get the new Placebo too, I like them. Their Without You I'm Nothing album is my favourite from them so far but people say the new one Sleeping With Ghosts is a strong record too. And the White Stripes' Elephant is on my must-buy list too, because the first single "Seven Nation Army" is bloody incredible. The best, coolest, sexiest song I've heard in ages. I heard some good things about The Kills and I liked a single I heard from them (can't remember the name, it had a very simple black-and-white live video tho), so I should check them out too. The last CD I bought was Spiderland, a 1991 album by the US band Slint. Excellent stuff, mainly instrumental soundscapes if ya get my drift. Dark, twisted, atmospheric, minimalist lo-fi stuff. If you like droning guitar sounds like Sonic Youth or Mogwai you'll love Slint. They were a huge influence on Polly Harvey and when she was 17 she wrote them a fan letter asking them if she could join the band!

My copy of the new Placebo album finally arrived today... Haven't listened to it yet tho, coz i'm busy listening to ... the new Radiohead album!!! ;D Some naughty person has leaked it onto the web... I dunno! The producer (Nigel Godrich) says it's not the final mix of the album, but it certainly sounds pretty close (i remember the exact same claims being made about the leak of the last Oasis album - and that turned out to be so close to the final mix that you could hear hardly any difference when it was released). So how is it? Not bad at all really! It's like a cross between OK Computer and Amnesiac... Those who hated the direction they took with the last two albums will definitely think it's a step back in the right direction - there's far more guitar, bass, and piano than the last two. It's certainly more organic in feeling. Still all very solemn and dark, but just wait til you hear them funking it up on "Punch Up At A Wedding"! ;D ;D This is only my first listen, but i'm already impressed with what i'm hearing (to put that comment in some context, i consider The Bends as one of the best albums ever made - whist Amnesiac has hardly ever been out of it's box since i got it the day of release). The new songs still don't quite have the basic tunefulness that made The Bends and OK Computer all-time classics, but i already get the feeling these could be propper grower songs - needing more than one or two listens to fully appreciate. The difference is that this time i think there may actually be the hidden depths that everyone was looking so hard to find in the last two albums. Basically:- me like! ;D It'll certainly be interesting to see if the final release really does have a different mix - it's going to take a lot of polishing to make these sound any better! In fact i think they should be very careful about changing these much from how they are now (the saying about polishing something so much that there's nothing left comes to mind). In writing this little preview i've already listend to some of the songs a few times again, and i really don't want them to sound any different than they already do... I'd buy the album even if it sounded just like this, but DAMN i wish i had a cd burner just so i could get these onto a cd and be certain of having these "unmixed" versions to listen to forever! If you want to check out any of these "unmixed" versions of the new Radiohead album for yourselves, then go to www.idioteque.it/multimedia/audio.htm and right-click on the song links and choose to "Save link target as..." (don't click the link itself coz all you'll get is a page of code). You may have to wait a few seconds for everything to start, or may have to try the download more than once, since everybody and their dog is trying to download the songs it's making the server a little unstable. Got to say i was getting very quick download speeds tho - so for anyone with a broadband connection it shouldn't take too long. Enjoy - i certainly am! ;D

Oh thanks for that Teppic! Triple J (Oz radio) is featuring "Sleeping with Ghosts" this week and have been playing the odd new Radiohead track that they have also downloaded from the net. I heard "Punch up at a Wedding" (what a title?) and really enjoyed it. A soundscape it is. I'm gonna be good and wait for the release to listen to it! I also want to get Evan Dando's new one "Baby I'm Bored" and Cat Power's "You Are Fee"..... $$$$

I got the best of velvet underground, yesterday coz i love them and my velvet underground and nico album is all scratched... Some friends can't be trusted to respect my cds Love it love: Stephanie says, pale blue eyes and my old favs all tomorrows parties and femme fatal And i'm listening to a new opera cd- i love it when i'm listening to it it makes me feel like i'm doing something epic... Doing the wash up whilst accompanied by an entire orchestra and some soprano belting her heart out! And listening to a cd a friend made me which includes the donnie darko song i was on about which is tempting me to check out tears for fears... I'm quite obsessed with the song so beautiful and depressing...I'll wait for the radiohead album to come out and i like what i've heard of sleeping with ghosts...

I bought Tom Waits' "Alice" yesterday. I like it so far. I haven't listened to the entire thing yet. So I'm going to keep it in my car.
(Fuck, I didn't mean to make that rhyme)

well, I must say a big wow for Placebo's Sleeping with ghosts, such a fine pice of modern rock... but all my attention and all my recomendations can be found in Cat Power's You are free... an amazing, eclectic album, so personal and touching and yet intriguing, the only-real Indie-diva at it's best (hope nobody thinks that Polly remains indie) Teppic!! you listening to the new Radiohead stuff!! you lucky !!!!! I can't download anything here! I can't wait for Smog's new record... any Bill Calahan lovers here?? Bilbo listening to Slint, no surprise, you've always had The Taste my dear but... is that elephant album THAT good? I mean, I'm starting to think about it... but nah, I'm too much of an pretentious-pseudo-elitist bastard for it, maybe... I mean, why buying stuff from groups that 'sound like' the raw 70's groups if I can buy stuff from the actual raw 70's groups... forget the Strokes, the White Stripes and the Kills... bring me some Stooges! rock on with Patti Smith! the good old Velvet Underground! vive le Glam!!! but, then again, what do I know?

good music is good music - 'nuff said I totally agree Sid. I hate hype machines and feel that they have usually deterred me from liking (or even giving a first listen to) certain bands as I'm trying to rebel against the masses, but fuck I could be missing out on some damn fine tunes if I let that continue! Luckily in Australia I don't feel like we have a certain channel ramming music down our throats and apart from teen-Top 40 garbage most people have a really diverse taste in music. The White Stripes impress me. They are not riding on the coat tails of publicity, they are the real deal. This is their 4th album and like to play the media against themselves. Read this review of the album, it pretty much sums up what I think: Again The White Stripes have strived to achieve yet another scorcher of an album, Jack and Meg are back with more vintage gear, organs, vocal harmonies, and loads more bass lines…..It’s all about guitars, drums, lyrical brilliance and trademark red & white outfits. ‘In The Cold Cold Night’ sung by Meg White is a beautiful number, really petite but sexy vocals with a bluesy background, sends shivers down your spine.
“Elephant’s” content is mixed up well, the way the White’s pull back the pace of the whole album on songs like ‘You’ve Got Her In Your Pocket.’ Remember how big guitars sounded in the 70’s?
Yeah well, there bigger now, with hits like ‘Ball and Biscuit’ tearing through your soul like charging Blues/Rock at it’s finest. I would say this album will definitely be classed as one of their finest yet. Some of my favourite tracks would have to be ‘Little Acorns’, 'Seven Nation Army' & ‘Hypnotize,’ which are awesome songs and explode with The White Stripes signature, which is emblazoned all throughout them..I hope I'm not coming off all defensive, but to be able to look forward to new albums and live performances by CURRENT artists is such a huge part of my musical discovery process. I saw the Stripes almost 2 years ago and it occurred to me "This is a fucking great band!". So Vinyl, this is really for you when you say: "I mean, why buying stuff from groups that 'sound like' the raw 70's groups if I can buy stuff from the actual raw 70's groups... forget the Strokes, the White Stripes and the Kills... bring me some Stooges! rock on with Patti Smith! the good old Velvet Underground! vive le Glam!!! " I believe mastering the art of big 70's guitars is a hard task, and Jack White has the vision. Viva la ROCK

(I had already written this post, but then the computer collapsed so here we go again...) I do agree with you Leewah, and with Ecosid too (although I find that generalizing in that way can be dangerous...) and I find that is a fine thing that the media is paying more attention to a kind of music that is more sincere and complex than N*SYNC or something like that. I mean, I'm very happy that Is this it? by the Strokes can be remembered as one of the important songs of these last years, and not only Oops! I did it again... But I cant find that these "The" groups are really *giving* something to music, and with music, I don't mean a mainstream thing (because they are giving something quite good to mainstream) but I talk about art and expression. It would be interesting to listen, in ten years, some crazy/talented girls "mastering the sound" of artists like Bjork or Tori Amos... I mean, a deserved tribute it would be, but we, the fans, would know that that is not the real thing. Even if it remains good music. I prefer listening to fresh stuff, even if it has been out for ages, because if an album gets to change the way of seeing some kind music, if it is intimate or truly something never listened before it remains fresh for ever. PJ Harvey. Pavement. Pixies. Pink Floyd. My Bloody Valentine. Roxy Music. Belle and Sebastian. Cocteau Twins. David Bowie. Lou Reed. T-Rex. Smog. Sigur Ros. Radiohead. Jeff Buckley. This list goes on forever... I respect trully and strongly this wave of new bands, since they are inspired by the best and some of them really rock... but I don't think they could ever touch the heights of true artists... It is just an opinion, but I'm quite happy, I love these kind of discussions because I get to learn a lot from them...
