These books are compulsory for kids growing up in the UK. ;D Very good stories. Lots of christian stuff hidden away in there tho, but that didn't stop me from becoming pagan even though i read the Narnia stories multiple times during my childhood - so i think it's safe to say they don't brainwash you. Actually it's quite funny, cos lots of my fave fantasy books (the Dragonlance novels) have heavy christian influences. Yet somehow looking back, i get the feeling these very same books influenced me even more towards pagan belief systems. Anyway, i'm surprised it's taken so long for there to be a film made of Narnia - the BBC made a very popular tv series of it many years ago. From the little i've seen of the film it's looking okay, if also a little bit LOTR me-too-ish.

I'm curious about the movie too. And as Teppic said above, it looks really LOTR-ish. And isn't HP a copy of LOTR, but translated into a children-style-thing?

Harry Potter is a copy of lots of ideas by lots of authors. There have been so many people who have made comparisons between characters and things which happen in the Potter books and very similar things which happen in other author's books (there are supposed to be a lot of things from Tolkien, Pratchett, Lewis, but since i haven't read any of the Potter books i can't really give any examples myself). A quick search on the net should find plenty of examples.
Or alternatively you can believe the official line. She was a bored housewife who had never read a fantasy book in her life and didn't even realise she was writing 'fantasy' anyway. Everything is all her original ideas and is in no way influenced by anything written by anyone else. Now, if you could step aside so the postman can bring her daily 'big-bag-of-money'...
You can probably guess what my thoughts are on the subject. ;D

Harry Potter is startlingly derivative. It's a car crash of ideas, many stolen from Tolkein, greek myths etc. I've never even thought they were that well-written. It's just making huge amounts of money stealing other people's ideas. Bit like Oasis really Reason for Editting: ...and Microsoft, now I come to think of it...

On Topic: That's really a coincidence because I read this book a few months ago because I read it was really a good book. (Mayby the film was already being made at that time). I did enjoy it so I look forward to the movie.
Off Topic: I'm really a Tolkien fan and read all his books and I just love them. So, it make sense when I say I really DONT like HP (and I don't mean the computers). I read the first two books and saw the first two films and I must say that a lot of her 'work' is stolen (a part stolen from Tolkien). Ofcourse, (I'm going to speak about Tolkien now), he also got his inspiration from other things and stories, but with a lot of characters, the similarity is to big. An other thing that I find strange is that she has a new book every year. I mean, how does she do it? Have you seen the size of it? I don't say she hasn't written it herself, but you can imagine what the quality and originality is... Ofcourse the children like it so that's the most important thing (I don't have to like it), but woman, stop being such a hypocrit who says to like children, but likes the money a lot more...

Bit like Oasis really
Andrew will, KILL, YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, you better hide your ass really good!!!!! Ontopic: It's not strange to be influenced by others, cause that is every day routine. What we see, what we hear or read: we all use the parts we like. But with HP it is so obvious where she got the ideas from. It's almost like telling a story to young people compiled out of 3 or 4 other stories. Maybe changing a name a bit so it's not really all being copied, but it's not far from it. I do like the 3 movies so far (and my girlfriend like the books) cause it's nice entertainment. But original? NO WAY! And back to Tolkien: I started to read the LOTR-trilogy in the mid 90s and I love them (although sometimes it's hard to read and to see the story in front of you). His other books (Silmarillion) are really hard to read, except for The Hobbit (when will Peter Jackson turn this one into a movie??). But he spent half his life in creating Middle Earth, not only the LOTR-trilogy and The Hobbit. He is a pioneer!!!

Bit like Oasis really
Andrew will, KILL, YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We've been here before ;D Actually, it's worth pointing out I liked Oasis very much in the '90s. I also think Standing on the Shoulders of Giants is very good in parts, and I really wish they'd done more stuff like 'Gas Panic' or 'Fucking in the Bushes'. Heathen Chemisty just sounded like an inferior copy of their earlier stuff though, and I've just got a bit bored with them. The latest album is the first one I haven't bought.

The latest album is the first one I haven't bought. Which makes it all the more a pity, cos it shits all over their previous two albums (especially HC). Try not to judge the album by the two singles released so far - with the exception of Mucky Fingers i'd say every track on the album is better than the singles. Liam's finally come into his own with writing songs, and Gem and especially Andy Bell really wrote some great stuff for this album. In my opinion at least (and most seem to agree) it's their best album since Morning Glory (and in some ways it could be argued is more consistent than that album in it's over-all quality). As per the Oasis/J.K. Rowling comparisons. I'd be much less harsh on Rowling if she didn't claim that everything was her original ideas, and admitted to being at least influenced by the authors she's 'borrowed' ideas from. Noel will quite happily openly say where he took ideas from, and i appreciate both his honesty and ability to make these ideas sound fresh and new again. That's completely different to Rowling, who claims she wasn't at all influenced by anything previously written in the fantasy genre, and even went so far as to say she didn't think she was writing fantasy books and proceeded to slag off fantasy as a genre, along with some of it's greatest authors (hell, some of the greatest authors of all-time in Tolkien and C.S. Lewis!). For the comparison to be fair Noel would have had to have claimed to have never heard or liked The Beatles, Stones, Pistols, T-Rex, ect.
