Ooh Lenore is nice! I can't get that at my local bookstore though. The only comic I have been a big fan of is Elfquest. It's really amazing and I love the way Wendy Pini draws the most dramatic expressions on every face and I love the stories. A friend has introduced me to some Japanese manga like Rourouni Kenshin and Bleach. I like it, but I don't have the money to buy every single book that comes out, so I just read the stuff that's available on the internet.

I used to buy those American comics from Image and Top Cow and alike. Witchblade, Xena, Fathom, Danger Girl, Darkchylde, Spirit Of The Tao. And I have a bunch of Vampirella and Purgatory comics. A lot of them I love to sell btw (except Fathom, Darkchylde and Danger Girl).

I've got some imported Ghostbuster comics waiting to be read. ;D Also The Amazing Spider-Man, Hellboy, and i've yet to start reading the first Sandman volume. Oh, and i've had The Crow sat there waiting to be read for a while now.

I just checked out "Death -- The High Cost of Living" by Neil Gaiman from our public library. I'm attempting to expose myself to his work... I don't usually read comics, so it's sorta weird for me.

^ Neil Gaiman is a fantastic writer in terms of comic book writing, though when you dont read comics reading a comic for the first time is often odd (my sister says she cant figure out how to read them!).
Gaiman writes such great dialogue for characters that makes sense to the character and isnt some crappy slang garbage. Too many newer comics are horribly writen. I tend to prefer when a comic is drawn by one person and written by another, this seems to keep both parties on the mark. Even though I enjoy Bear I think that it is a very indulgent of the writer.

Do you (or anyone else) have any recommendations on his work? I know some authors have "easier" reads to start out with...

I havent read any of his novels because they arent the style of novel I like to read. The Sandman series is really good, however I havent read "Death..." so I cant compare (its really expensive over here and not in the library) it in terms of whether Sandman is better to start off with. Even the trade paperbacks of Sandman are quite expensive over here...The whole set would set me back about $400-$500. I dont know if people are aware but australia doesnt really have a large publisher devoted to comics, we mostly have small scale publishers that do comics and others that do them like zines, so self produced and printed at a printery. So all we get is comics from OS and they tend to be expensive...a $3 US comic is about $5.50 here... Here is a link to aussie comics if anyone is interested www.tabula-rasa.info/AusComics/ComicsPublishers.htmlI am working on a comic zine at the moment based on the adventures of our bizarre pets, my comics are really bad, so the collection will be called "crappy comics about pets" or somethng like that.

Do you (or anyone else) have any recommendations on his work? I know some authors have "easier" reads to start out with... If you're interested in his novels as well then i'd suggest 'Neverwhere' which was his first 'proper' novel and many still feel one of his best. If you want something a little lighter (in page count at least) then 'Stardust', which i've still yet to read myself to be honest. It has a character that's based upon Tori in it too, and there's a film currently in production based upon it (tho i only just read a short interview with him saying the producers are cutting quite a few characters out, and it gave the impression that he's not having anywhere near the amount of say in things as most people seem to think - so definitely one to read before the movie comes out). Neil Gaiman is a fantastic writer in terms of comic book writing, though when you dont read comics reading a comic for the first time is often odd (my sister says she cant figure out how to read them!). Hey you should get her some authentic Japanese manga to really mess with her head then! Watching people try to work out how to read one for the first time is always funny as it takes them ages before they even notice that the first page is at the back. ;D
