The first two X-Men films were great entertainment and I really did think the series had some mileage. However, after seeing THIS cack-handed and lethargic mess...I've changed my mind!
A very slow opening half hour in which a "cure" for mutants is announced, something which splits the mutant community and widens the differences of Xavier and Magneto. The story builds to an inevitable climax when the two mutant camps battle it out in San Francisco (fancy moving the Golden Gate bridge by thought power alone? No problem!).
It's hard to define what exactly is wrong with this movie but ludicrous dialogue, tired looking action scenes and horrendous casting (Vinnie fucking Jones for fuck's sake!) will do for starters. Kelsey Grammer will always be Frasier and no amount of kids blue crayons and a wig from Mullets-R-Us will change that. He also gets the most laughable line ("My stars and garters!!") that I've heard in a movie for many a year.
The rest of the cast return in their familiar roles including the crappily handled resurrection of Jean Grey (Famke Janssen looking as rough as a badger's arse) and Storm (the pencil thin Halle Berry....eat some bloody pies girl!!!). Hell, even Hugh Jackman looks embarrassed by the whole affair as he is practically left isolated at the story's end.
A change of Director was NOT a good idea. Brett Ratner has delivered a bit of a turkey here.
REALLY disappointing!

I loved the comics and cartoons as a kid, the first two movies were great, I hope the 3rd one doesn't stink as much as you say Only one way to find out!

I'd heard some good things about X-Men 3 personally. In fact this is the first negative opinion i've seen so far (Jappy is officially first! ). Was a bit worried when i heard the original director had flown off to do Superman, but some interviews i'd read had left me at least feeling the new director had good intentions. Obviously that doesn't always translate to a good film (i've heard Uwe Boll is a very friendly guy ...ahem). Dunno if i feel up to going seeing this film at the cinema tho. For some reason i just don't feel too excited by it - maybe it's because there have been several comic-book films recently that have each raised the bar a little, maybe it's just cos i'm feeling a bit crap, or maybe i'm just generally down cos of stuff that's been going on recently. The irony is that if i don't go see it at the cinema i'll almost certainly end up buying the dvd release as soon as it comes out, so i'll end up spending even more money on the film (but since i have the first two dvd's, i may as well complete the collection).

Well, I didn't think it was that bad!
I agree the first two movies were excellent, and it was lacking in comparison to them. I think what makes them distinctive is the extra characteristion, moral ambiguities and juicy dialogue. Unfortunately there are lots of potentially interesting sub-plots in X3 that they simply don't bother with, so it's difficult to get involved (can we have more of the wing boy please? And the girl who can walk through walls? And my mother rather liked Vinnie Jones!)
On the plus side I thought the acting was decent and the last half hour is the best special effect/action bonanza I've seen in ages (although admittedly the finale is a tad on the melodramatic side!).
If anything lacking's it's the script in the first half of the film.
...and if that's Famke Janssen looking 'rough as a badger's arse', well, I'm off to molest the nearest badger... (I actually thought she did rather well with a dubious story line.)

The reviews in the weekend papers here all basically slated the third installment... I didn't see anything higher than a 6/10.
These are not my types of films though, so excuse me while I slip back out the door ;D.
