This is absoutely fucking hilarious and rocks like a bitch. Elements of School of Rock, Bill & Ted and Wayne's World combine to make this Jack Black's finest hour (and a half). Loved the appearances by Ben Stiller (who reveals the secret behind "the pick") and Tim Robbins. Ronnie James Dio, Meat Loaf (as young Jack's dad) and Dave Grohl also star.
If you don't love this film, then you have no pulse.

Let's get the "Daniel Craig is a shit choice for Bond" thing out of the way first. He isn't. He's bloody good and I was wrong to sniff huffily when he was announced as the new 007.
Casino Royale ranks up there with the best Bond movies of the series. Everything is in place: stunts, bad guys with scars and a great score (by David Arnold again...good work there, although the title song by Chris Cornell is one of the worst Bond themes ever).
Craig plays Bond with a harder edge, rather like Timothy Dalton did and he more than looks the part. Even the Bond quips are delivered with menace instead of a smirk.
Definitely a return to form for the Bond series after the incredibly far-fetched Die Another Day.

Well, it is good. Very good, in fact.
Apart from Mia Farrow who is miscast as the nanny, Mrs Baylock, the cast is good and execute their roles well although Julia Stiles is a little weak as Ambassador Thorn's wife. Not that it matters as this is all about the anti-christ, five year old Damien Thorn and the creeping menace that surrounds him as, one by one, all those that surround him meet bizarre and horrifying deaths.
If you've seen the original 1976 film then the plot will be no surprise at all. This remake doesn't deviate too much but differs in one main area - it is more of a horror movie than the original ever was. For example, Thorn (Liev Schreiber) and his wife are both plagued by demonic dreams. The Omen's '15' certificate means that the gore is minimal but that doesn't detract from the startling deaths, particularly the decapitation scene which probably eclipses the one in which David Warner's head was almost lovingly removed in the original!
British actors Pete Postlethwaite and David Thewlis have major roles as the priest and photographer respectively and are both excellent. I was also impressed with the film's score by Marco Beltrami. It's brooding, menacing and dramatic in all the right places. Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick looks sinister enough as Damien and there is a cameo appearance from the '1976 Damien', Harvey Stephens, who plays a tabloid reporter. I have to confess that I missed that but saw the name in the end credits and yes...it's him.
I know it's yet another remake of a well known movie and you can argue the pros and cons of that all you like but The Omen IS worth seeing.

But what is the advantage of HD-DVD and BlueRay DVD? Are the pictures and the sound in even better quality than today's dvd's? There are SuperBit releases, but you need a special dvd-player for that, right? Isn't that also the fact with HD and BlueRay? Blu-Ray and HD-DVD WILL be better in picture and sound but yes, you will need a Blu-Ray or HD player. Exisiting DVD's will be able to be played on these new machines. In fact, the makers claim that your DVD's will look even better. Hmmm SuperBit DVD's can be played on any DVD player. They claim to have better picture and sound quality, hence the lack of extras on SuperBit titles.

Personally, I like to see the films I love as a Director's Cut as I can get a bit geeky about it! ;D
However, unless you have a steel arse, three or four hours in a cinema is probably not a good idea and so DVD is the perfect medium for analysing a Director's vision of his work. The addition of a commentary almost certainly means you will sit through it all again to hear why he/she left out certain scenes etc.
Your "average" cinema-goer will not have the attention span of us geeky types and anything beyond 100 minutes will have them fidgeting like fuck and annoying the crap outta me with their popcorn shenanigans.

Stop with the remakes and force Kurt Russell to do Big Trouble In Little China 2 i say! But isn't a sequel basically a remake anyway? Either way it's laziness on the part of the film industry!

Ahhh the good old Disaster Movie!! The 70's was full of them but they have been a sadly neglected genre of late and so it comes as no surprise that a remake of the 1972 Irwin Allen classic has emerged.
If you don't know the story...it's New Year's Eve and a luxury liner, the Poseidon, capsizes after being hit by a tidal wave. The story follows a small group of survivors who decide to find a way out for themselves rather than wait for a rescue.
A decent cast including Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss and Kevin Dillon (overacting like crazy) although none of them are asked to deliver much in the way of a performance and some of the dialogue is typically cringeworthy.
Poseidon ISN'T a better film than its 34 year old predecessor but it does score highly in the special effects department, as you would probably expect. The wave hitting the ship and the subsequent effect on its passengers is handled brilliantly and is shockingly effective. Some of the passengers, including some of the main characters themselves, die horribly but the shock value is kept to a level befitting the 12A (in the UK anyway) certificate.
At 98 minutes, it's a very entertaining, if at times uncomfortable movie. Just don't expect any Oscar winning performances....apart from the girls and boys in the SFX Department.

Hello, Rolf Harris? You might like to get the BBC cameras up to Manchester pretty damned quickly! ;D What's wrong with sending Bill Oddie? ;D ;D He's more into birds than badgers, isn't he?

The first two X-Men films were great entertainment and I really did think the series had some mileage. However, after seeing THIS cack-handed and lethargic mess...I've changed my mind!
A very slow opening half hour in which a "cure" for mutants is announced, something which splits the mutant community and widens the differences of Xavier and Magneto. The story builds to an inevitable climax when the two mutant camps battle it out in San Francisco (fancy moving the Golden Gate bridge by thought power alone? No problem!).
It's hard to define what exactly is wrong with this movie but ludicrous dialogue, tired looking action scenes and horrendous casting (Vinnie fucking Jones for fuck's sake!) will do for starters. Kelsey Grammer will always be Frasier and no amount of kids blue crayons and a wig from Mullets-R-Us will change that. He also gets the most laughable line ("My stars and garters!!") that I've heard in a movie for many a year.
The rest of the cast return in their familiar roles including the crappily handled resurrection of Jean Grey (Famke Janssen looking as rough as a badger's arse) and Storm (the pencil thin Halle Berry....eat some bloody pies girl!!!). Hell, even Hugh Jackman looks embarrassed by the whole affair as he is practically left isolated at the story's end.
A change of Director was NOT a good idea. Brett Ratner has delivered a bit of a turkey here.
REALLY disappointing!
