bah, this plague of re-makes of horror films makes me angry, at least this is original... It IS...but it borrows heavily from so many others. Still good fun though!

A meteorite hurtles into a small town somewhere in America (it may have been North Carolina? There's loads of stereotypical hicks in it!) and a plague of parasitic worms is unleashed. Cue the carnage....! Special effects vary between the unbelievable (man split in two - awesome!) and the laughable (hero wrestles with an infected deer) but it is played for laughs most of the time. Excellent horror with lashings of dry humour. "that's some pretty fucked-up shit!"www.slithermovie.net/

Wow!!
A tip of the cap to you, sir, for such a great and comprehensive review!
I haven't got around to seeing this yet and not sure if I will. However, it's definitely one I shall rent when it surfaces on DVD....based on your recommendation of course!

The other day I saw a teaser trailer for 'Night At The Museum' which looks really good! The bad news is it's at least 7 months away!
Released 22 December (US) 4 January (UK, Germany) 31 January (France) 14 February (Belgium) 15 February (Netherlands)
A bumbling security guard at the Museum of Natural History accidentally lets loose an ancient curse that causes the animals and insects on display to come to life and wreak havoc.
Stars Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, Owen Wilson.

*cough* I loved it! sorry but this movie is a piece of crap. complete waste of time. tarantino deserves a good spanking! Well, as I'm sure you know, this ISN'T a Quentin Tarantino movie - all he did as a favour to his buddy Eli Roth (who DID direct it) was to endorse the film and, in turn, Roth gave him an Executive Producer credit. All very much back-slapping stuff and I'm pretty sure that if Tarantino HAD made it, then the results would have been a lot different. But back to the movie itself....Roth had been hyping up 'Hostel' months before it opened promising all kinds of mayhem on screen and suggesting that some boundaries may be crossed for the first time. Well, it was definitely horrific in places but Roth trained his camera AWAY from the promised carnage at times and left it to our imaginations. Sometimes that can be so much more scary than actually seeing the horror itself. As for "no plot" - well, how many horror movies have much of a plot anyway? Actually, there were several sub-plots going on such as the roles of the prostitutes that lured the guys to the town in the first place and the street kids who turned nasty unless they were given sweets. Roth had already proved with 'Cabin Fever' that he was a massive fan of the horror genre and while 'Hostel' was no classic and paid homage to other movies such as 'The Texas Chain Saw Massacre', it was certainly a very good chiller and stayed with me long after the final credits rolled. A question for Mina & Red Velvet....you must have had some idea from the reviews, trailers, posters what this film was about....so why go?

Couldn't resist adding my (late) thoughts to your list:
21 Grams - cracking drama, good performances Constantine - average thriller/horror with Keanu doing his usual impression of an Ikea storage unit. Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind - a bit bonkers but engrossing and Kate Winslet is superb. Hero - looks amazing but is slow moving and about 45 mins too long. Kung Fu Hustle - hilarious! Man On Fire - Great thriller and Dakota Fanning steals the acting honours. Saw - One of the best and most inventive horror films in years. Saw 2 - Almost as good as the original. Serenity - overrated....some good one-liners though. Vanilla Sky - oh dear....just not very good. At all.

AvP2: Requiem....a disappointing first half hour but then the action and gore is stepped up dramatically. A massive improvement on the first AvP movie which relied too heavily on CG and played like a computer game for the most part. What you have here are "real", not CG, Aliens and Predators battling it out with a town of unfortunate humans getting in their way. It's not deep or meaningful ;D but a great popcorn movie with plenty to offer fans of the Alien/Predator series which, in my opinion, has just been given a new lease of life. Bring on AvP3!!

Just adding a thumbs-up to previous comments on The Exorcist.
Not just my favourite horror film but my favourite film ever.
I was around at the time of its original release and can remember vividly all the press and tv coverage of it. Stories of people running from the cinema screaming etc. were common. I first saw it when it re-released in 1975 and it was still causing a real commotion. The Samaritans were outside the cinema and handed me a card as I went in! By the time Regan had vomited on Father Karras, half the audience had left, not being able to take any more...I've never seen anything like it, before or since.
Of course, the film looks a little tame compared to today's offerings but it still has a power that is hard to beat. It is still scary and the performances of the cast are fantastic. It was good enough to have picked up several Oscars but unfortunately the Academy never consider Horror films for the main awards.

The Black Dahlia on DVD. Had its moments but generally came across as a poor version of 'LA Confidential'.
