Ok, so I've always had issues with it, but lately it's getting really bad. I'm taking special vitamines for it and I keep my nails short and I usually use a transparent nailpolish, which is supposed to help too. As for my hair, I go to the hairdressers regulary and I also use products which supposed to help the splitting and breaking...
My mum has the same issues... could it be something in the family?
I don't need long nails, don't like it... they split even when they're super short!
Reason for Editing: my spelling suks.

I have/had the same issues! Things that could help and you might be lacking : biotin, calcium (try to get it mostly from food, not even necessarily dairy because the supplements don't absorb the same way as food does - I still take a supplement though protein (maybe eat a handful of sunflower seeds a day. That would add another 6-8 grams.) and EFA's like fish oil, flaxseed oil or hempseed.
All of that will take months to kick in though :-\
ETA : My mom has the same issue as well so it's possible that it could be genetic that we're lacking something or need extra of something.

Yeah, unfortunately I have the same problem and I think it's genetics, sadly. My nails aren't too bad as long as I keep them kind of short. If I try to grow them just a little bit long, forget it. I have used stuff from Citre-Shine for split ends that helps a little, but everything that I have tried for splitting nails doesn't do shit! Aargh!
Hey I can help with the nail thing - I'm a qualified nail tech!
Ok, calcium does f-all to nails, there's actually VERRRRRRRY little calcium in your nails...try a zinc supplement.
Are your nails bendy or quite strong? If they split, it's usually down to over flexible nails or super brittle nails...
If they're bendy, try a nail strengthener...but go to a nail salon and buy a professional one, the ones you can buy off shelves in shops are crap. If your nails seem quite strong but keep splitting, try the almond oil, that'll insert some moisture into them to make them a bit more flexible
The ideal nail should be a nice combo of strength and flexibilty.
If you want a good oil, try Solar Oil by Creative Nail Design...it's a combo of almond oil, rice bran oil, vitamin e and jojoba oil - which is a carrier oil so it's superdooper at helping the other ingredients penetrate your nail plate layers.
In the mean time, keep your nails super short as you have been. File rather than cut, I always find cutting the nail shatters the layers and can cause even more splitting. And ignore the crap about only filing one way, I always file back and forwards, it helps to blend and merge those end nail plate layers together.
Splitting nails can be a hereditry thing though I'm afarid, just as ridges, nail sizes and shapes are. Blame your genes!!
As for hair..try an intensive henna conditioner...one that you can leave on for a while. I always find apply this to my hair, and then wrapping it up in a warm towel for 10-15 mins helps to put all the moisture back into my ends.
Thanks laystar! Didn't know you were a nail expert! My nails are quite strong, not really bendy. You're right about the cutting, I always clip them, but they split even more, but I hate using a file, it just goes thru me, but I guess I'll have to get over it! When these vitamines are gone, I'll try to find a zinc supplement!
Oooh and anything with beer sounds a great plan, Mina!
