I'd say the harpsichord is not a very common instrument in pop music these days. Apart from our Tori, who did use it in an extraordinary way for Boy for Pele, do you know of any other songs using the harpsichord?? I only know one David Gray's Ain't no Love from his Life in Slow Motion album: www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6vYPaLEeI0any others?

The harpsichord was really big in the 60s. It fit in very well with the psychedelic and proto-prog sounds of the time. The playing styles were much brighter and less bassy than Tori's technique so it almost sounds like a different instrument. One of my favorite bands of all time, The Kinks, used the harpsichord extensively in the later 60s. Their three best albums: Face to Face, Something Else and Village Green Preservation Society use it extensively. Most famous instance: www.youtube.com/watch?v=86jnj8TgWS4Other bands of the time like The Zombies (Imagine The Swan), Pink Floyd (See Emily Play), and even The Beatles (Because) dabbled in the instrument as well. Note: I should mention that I don't know of an instance where the Beatles ever used a real harpsichord, the instances I know of are electric versions of the instrument. The Damned used the harpsichord extensively in their later, "pop-goth" days. My favorite is Grimly Fiendish off of Phantasmagoria (this version uses a synth sample to simulate the instrument): www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aeWKX2PZ_sNote: I don't know if the album version used an acoustic or electric harpsi, the 80s production techniques eliminate the warm harmonics that would make it possible to tell. One of the coolest modern instances of the instrument was by R.E.M: Half a World Away: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5nNG8O-kZcThis guy also wrote a few songs for the harpsichord: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiU8xQGr1yU

I found another great song at work today.
The Model by Belle and Sebastian
The harpsichord is very understated but really adds to the song. It is one of B & Ss best tracks from their middle period I think.
