So i have about 20 GREAT burnt albums. And it makes me feel like shit. Because i wanna buy them all in real! Well not because of that, but because i don't really have the choice. Now that i'm doing babysitting, i'm getting some money, and i want to buy all the wonderful albums i burnt back, because i've really started detesting that habit i got into. It's just crap, and unfair for the artist. But then i go "Oh whatever, they're already super rich and famous, they don't need my extra 20 euros", but still. It's not special, and it's wrong and i feel bad about it now. But, i love music so much, i'd be ruined in a second if i started buying all the albums i wanted. It's been really upsetting me. I've done a list of all the cds that i want, and there are LOADS. Including the about 20 ones i burnt but want to buy. I figured, what i should do is go to my music store regularly, and always check those bargain baskets, you know, where they have cds they want to get rid of for 8 euros so on But still. I hate not being capable of buying what i want. On the other hand, i'm gonna get a job this summer, so hopefully, i'll get to buy many albums.

if i wanted to buy every album that i like, i'd have to sell everything that i have. i love mp3's and i don't feel giulty ! well if u have money (or if u have money that u don't have to spend for other things, like gass, rent, books etc.) then spend it for the albums if u want. i am not an "original album" fan, to me all that matters is the music so i don''t have to have the original one for no reason. but it depends on the person really. ;D

Well, how about this...you download only so much, or lets say 5 songs from an album, and when you have enough, buy it? That is usually what I do, when I have the money or when I have a hankerin for some new music, I set aside like 40 bucks, and get at least 3 brand spanking new cd's out of it. I got Le Tigre's new one for only 10 bucks! oh and btw. when you buy a cd, the artist doesnt get 100% of the purchase price. Thats why its good to support a great artist who doesnt get a lot of attention. Most artist and top artist mind you, get maybe 1 dollar or maybe at least 5 dollars from a cd purchase, cuz its divided amongst everyone who worked on it

This is why i've always purposefully stayed away from downloading full (finished) albums - i know i'd end up in the exact same situation. I'd end up with a long list of albums i intend to buy due to the fact that i have a conscience about everyone involved with the music (and that includes the record labels - especially the small ones which support less mainstream artists) getting their fair share of the money which i'd feel i was cheating them out of. And i know the simple truth is that after just a few months i'd have a list of albums that i could never hope to buy fairly. Instead i try to only try one or two songs from an album i'm interested in, and if i like what i hear i go out and buy the final album. If i don't then the songs get deleted and as i see it, it's no different than me hearing those songs on a radio or on tv - i get to hear a little of the music for free and make my decision. Everyone's a winner. But y'know i want the finished album. Not just the music, but the art, the lyrics, and often these days the extras on the special edition. Listening on a computer takes so much away from the experience sometimes... For example i bought the album 'Nino Rojo' by Devendra Banhart recently, and all the artwork (front and back cover, inlay ect.) was obviously designed by hand, and it added to the over all feeling of the album. As a whole it means something to me. But if i'd just downloaded all the songs it would have lost part of it's charm. Sometimes there's a beauty in the structure and presentation of an album that is just completely lost when downloaded (and that includes the payed for download services too, so it's not simply me feeling guilt about the money). I think the bargin bin idea is probably your best soloution Hanna. Maybe concentrate on those artists who are current and on small labels so that you know you're contributing to continuing something that's given you great enjoyment. Just take your time and try not to end up with a list which is another 20 extra albums long in a year's time. I say support the smaller artists/labels first simply because a couple of pounds/euros obviously means much more to them than it does to a millionaire artist and a massive worldwide label. Just as an aside given what i've said about officially released music... I don't see anything wrong with downloading bootleg live material, or rare things which aren't readily available. It's just about the fairness of giving back something to those who have given you something you take much enjoyment from. Those are my own personal thoughts on the subject anyway.
