Well.. I just thought that as we're from all parts of the world, it's ok to ask, what do you think of this Eurovision thing? And yes, that's not the only reason I'm asking this. We as Finns are so proud to host the song contest this year! (Really, that does something to our poor national self-esteem... we've always been the losers in this contest! This far... ;D) So... I know there are people from all parts of Europe here and I'm curious to know your reactions! And the favourites. After all, it's music what it is all about, isn't it...? My favourites this far are: Georgia (WHOA!!! Some Björk-influence here?!) Serbia Macedonia Finland (obviously! ) Slovenia and I would like to say Sweden, cause I really like the Ark, but this song... well... not for me...? (Their first CD was fantastic!) So this is all about music, so I guess it's appropriate to start this thread here?! Luna (being as lunatic as ever...)

Ahhhh! I love Eurovision! I haven't really listened to this year's entrants though cos all the ones I listened to previously didn't make it through to the finals through their country's qualifying programmes etc so I think I'm a bit of a bad luck curse for entrants ;D Of the ones I know & can think of right now, I don't really like the German entry, & I HATE the UK's (although I always hate our entry ) I hear that the Serbian & Ukrainian are among the favourites to win but I don't think I've heard them yet Either way, I shall certainally be enjoying the cheesefest tomorrow night

"the cheesefest" LOL
Well, the UK's song this year is a bit sad... it seems like they are giving up, because it's SO hard to admit defeit anyway.. so let's just do it as CAMP as we can! And it's not going to work. But that wasn't the purpose I think. It's better to just make fun of it and lose, than make it seriously and lose...

Indeed, the UK never take this thing seriously at all anymore (hence the cheesefest comment ) No idea if you get the UK converage of the show but the BBC cover it & the commentator, Terry Wogan, is always so sarcastic & scathing of Eurovision & all the songs & contestants, it's like one big giant joke. But I do love it so! ;D All I want from this year is cheesey songs, some absolutely atrocious performance from someone...anyone! Lots of glitter & sparkles & just generally a fun night...that's the main thing of Eurovision for me, it's just harmless fun with the occasional good song

It's hard to be as big as Uk is and still lose something... but actually I think it's good for you! Well, Finnish commentators take it as a joke as well, but this time we are very excited as you can imagine.. ha ha I think it's the "football world championships for the ones that prefer music"! The UK took it seriously when you won?! Your last one was Katrina wasn't it..? Luna

It was indeed, Katrina & the Waves in like '97 I think...wasn't an atrocious song, not great though but I can't remember the other entries so no idea if it was the best that year I think with the UK, so long as we beat France & Germany then we don't really mind where we finish cos we never really expect to win anymore ;D I really should go brush up on all the entrants before it's shown tomorrow (or later tonight if I'm being accurate ) so I can judge who I want to win

It's hard to lose and that's why some of the contestants don't want to try anymore.. like Italy that has great musical history refused to compete anymore... But I think different countries take it differently. Here in Finland it's a big thing cause we've waited it so long! Though personally i thought Lordi wasn't actually the best last year. It didn't feel like a real winning cause it was just because the costumes? But... I really hope Georgia wins this time! Cause I really don't believe in Finland's chances though it's not the worst song this time... ;D Luna

It's one big sideshow for years already. It's all about politics. And often a really lousy song wins (remember those 2 old men singing a very boring song 4-5 years ago?).
Last year a fantastic song won (LORDI!!!! A kind of GWAR look-a-like). Last Thursday was the semi-final and 9 out of 10 countries that made it to the final are former East-European countries! And it's not because of the great songs... Why didn't make such great songs from Iceland, Czech Republic and Holland didn't make it? A lot of other countries who didn't make it (or where already in the final) where very surprised (negatively spoken) about this result and something is coming up for next year.
How come the poor Eastern European countries end up with these high votes? Or is it just because the Western Euripean countries care less and less for a songcontest like this one?

Urgh... I haven't even heard the 'Belgian' song yet... [it's the French part who's sending something in, I believe...] Have no idea what we've sent. LOL. I only listen to 'Radio 1' here in Belgium and they don't broadcast shite music! I am SO not interested.

The voting thing is totally fucked up which bothers me A LOT it's just stupid.... Bad songs keep winning but it's a lot of fun to see all these people trying to sing though weird dances, crazy songs, the outfits I'll sure be watching tonight... or tommorow, gotta check when it's on tv

Weeell I think the Eurovision is great, because it unites so many people from a big bunch offa countries. Musically it really serves no-one, but I don't think it's that important I haven't really been watching this year (or any year actually), even though Finland won and I'm from the city where Lordi came I'm too impatient to see all the performances... Lordi was great for it's entertaintment, it was something so different and unique I think. It wouldn't go through another time...but I think hanna pakarinen is awful can't stand her But I guess I'll go visit the city centre tonight 'cause people are gathered there for the eurovision! Mwaahh

I just don't care about this song.. it sounds so familiar already.. but it suits Eurovision completely and has good chances I think! Hmm. About East European countries winning the semi-finals.. I didn't realize that. It's a good point. Though I still think most of those songs were among the best so maybe that's why people voted? Or is it sympathy for the "less-lucky" Europeans? Hope not. I have to admit I voted! ;D And two times.. For Georgia and Serbia! We'll see how it ends today. Luna(vision)
