Oh how this has been overdue! I'm starting a Depeche Mode thread because I know that there are fans out there!!! In case you are speechless from the absolute wonder that is DM, I have questions! What's your favourite album? What's your favourite song? What made you like DM? Have you ever seen DM live? What is better... the DM of the '80s, '90s or '00s? What did you think of the tribute album, For The Masses? Do you think that DM still have the tenacity to create the outstanding music of yore? Discuss. Reason for Editing: Duffman thrusting in the direction of the problem!

Yay for Depeche Mode!
Favourite Album: I absolutely adore the five albums from Some Great Reward to Songs of Faith and Devotion. Before that they were an excellent singles band, and the albums after are all very good, but less consistent. If you put a gun to my head and demand that I select my absolute favorite I would likely say Songs of Faith and Devotion.
Favourite Song: Behind the Wheel--Single Edit: A perfect mixture of early electo-dance Mode and the quasi-industrial mid-period Mode.
Why I Like Them: I love dark music, and very few people do darkness better than these guys. They also have a knack for making amazing singles that you can dance to and hear again and again on the radio while keeping the quality of the albums unbelievably high.
What Era (80s, 90s, 00s): I'm gonna say that the mid/late eighties is my favorite 84-89.
Opinion of For the Masses? I tend to avoid tribute albums, so I haven't heard it.
Do DM have the tenacity to create the outstanding music of yore?: When DM lost Alan Wilder after SOFAD, they lost their musical soul. I consider Wilder to be one of the top 10 singular talents in popular music (along with our Tori of course). If you have been following his group Recoil, you know why I say that. The Mode have been rediscovering themselves since his departure, and have emerged a different band. Martin Gore's more poppish sensibilities have been coming the the fore, and some great some has emerged. I'm going to say something that I hope doesn't insult anyone, but DM at times remind me a bit of Pink Floyd after Roger Waters left. They sound at times like they are imitating their previous glory--Almost like DM covering DM. That said, the last three albums (Ultra, Exciter, Angel) have has some outstanding moments and I enjoy them all.
Kelli you didn't answer your own questions?

Matt- been busy , My fave album has to be Violator. I know it's like saying that your favourite Nirvana album is Nevermind, like the rest of the world who find the rest of their catologue "unaccessible," but for me, Violator is the closest thing to perfection. Although I love pretty much everything from "Black Celebration" to "Ultra," put a gun to my head and "Violator" wins. I know what you mean about DM being a pretty solid singles band Matt, but I just can't go for the albums before Some Great Reward, I prefer the Singles collection, 81-85. My favourite song has to be "Enjoy The Silence" or "It's no Good." I like them both equally. I like them because I like dark transgressive music too, not faux Robert Smith "darkness," but Ian Curtis darkness, which I think that DM do to perfection. Dave Gahan has the best voice, although I do like Martin's leads on certain songs, like "Home" where he actually has some depth and emotion and the production is awesome. I have never seen DM live, although I had a chance to see them in Paris last year, if I extended my trip for two more weeks and could live off 200 euro for that two weeks (I would have had to do the Marianne Faithful tour of Paris - sleeping under public rubbish bins in the Luxembourg Gardens- not that brave!). I prefer Depeche Mode of the '90s. Violator, SOFAD, SOFAD Live and Ultra are all my favourite albums. But without the DM of the '80s... there would not be any DM of the '90s. Through the '80s, they just became more refined. I used to like the tribute album, the Smashing Pumpkins' cover of "Never Let Me Down Again" is probably the only good to come from it though. Oh, I absolutely agree with Matt, Alan Wilder's programming and use of keyboards is sorely missed. While Kerry Hopwood is OK on Ultra, I can feel the void that the lack of Wilder has on the albums. I don't think that DM can continue to be the band they were in the '80s and '90s, I don't think that they can afford to be. They need to better themselves, I think. I haven't been bothered to really listen to Exciter or Angel yet... what do you guys think>? I hope that the new album next year kicks ass. It's DM, why should I expect anything less?

I think that Exciter and Playing the Angel are definitely both worth your time if you enjoyed Ultra. Exciter is a bit lighter, and Angel feels a bit like DM by numbers at times, however both have great moments.
Seeing Tinus mention "Blasphemous Rumors" makes me wish I had picked that as my favorite song...
"and when I die, I expect to find him laughing"

What's your favourite album?Right now, its BLACK CELEBRATION *has song in head* I LOOOOVE this album. So much fun. It encompasses everything Depeche Mode is IMO What's your favourite song?Right now, its "Personal Jesus"...for my own reasons though What made you like DM?I dunno....I just picked them up after hearing em on the radio(KROQ's then 80's flash back lunches, etc) and the rest as they say is History Have you ever seen DM live? No, too damn expensive for my blood. I'd love to though. What is better... the DM of the '80s, '90s or '00s?80's all the fucking way baby! Their 90's stuff is a bit forgettable, and their latest stuff is ok, but DOES NOT compare to the 80's What did you think of the tribute album, For The Masses?Haven't heard it. Should I? Do you think that DM still have the tenacity to create the outstanding music of yore?Playing the Angel was ok, a bit of a hit and miss for me really, BUT having said that, I'm glad that they are still around.

Sometimes i'm in the mood for dark depeche mode, sometimes smooth depeche mode, sometimes sex depeche mode I looove the dead of night ;D ''We're the horniest boys With the corniest ploys Who take the easiest girls To our sleaziest worlds''

It was very refreshing to hear something like Dead of Night that is not so serious. I do enjoy Exciter quite a bit...

Some songs of speak & spell crack me up too though... ''Hey you're such a pretty boy (you're so pretty) Hey you're such a pretty boy (you're so pretty) Hey you're such a pretty boy You're so pretty (p-r-e, double-t-y)''

Not a huge fan of them, but I am a fan of these guys... I saw Depeche Mode live during the Violator tour, but only because I wanted to see the opening band Nitzer Ebb.
