Earworm, a loan translation of the German Ohrwurm, is a term for a song stuck in one's head. Use of the English translation was popularised by James Kellaris, a professor of marketing at the University of Cincinnati. His studies appeared to demonstrate that different people have varying susceptibilities to earworms, but that almost everybody has been afflicted with one at some time or another.
Earworms may be songs or tunes that become stuck in the phonological loop, the part of the brain that rehearses verbal information in Baddeley's model of working memory. This usually happens when a person sings the song or hums the tune once and then repeats it in his or her mind.
At the moment I have 'liquid Diamonds' by Tori and 'strange behaviour' by silverchair. What song is currently infesting you?

the Assholes Are Cheap Today improv it's kind of a constant earworm in the back of my head and it tends to hop into the conscious part of my mind when I'm annoyed or slightly pissed about someone

A Design for Life by Manic Street Preachers - the kind of hook heavy pop rock that is designed to get in your brain and bounce around for months.

Reckoner by Radiohead. I listen to that song on repeat on my way to work. PJ Harvey's White Chalk. As in, the whole album. I'll be sitting here at work, and all of the sudden the beginning of "The Devil" will pop into my head, or her wailing from the Mountain. Which then leads me to think about Emily Dickinson and then back to Silence. I this album!

Ohrwurm is actually on of the good German words. It's very round and has lots of colour in it. You don't get that often with German words. I am not that classy. Right now I have Avril Lavigne's girlfriend in my head. I absolutely despite this song, but I can't get rid of it.

^ Awesome! I know a good German word!
Today I have 'Harry's House - Centerpiece' by Joni Mitchell in my head... which then segways into the verses of NWA's 'Fuck Tha Police'. Weird.

The biggest earworm that I have had throughout my entire life is without a doubt "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" by Sophie B. Hawkins. I think that has been somewhat stuck in my head for the last 15 years. If I was ever on a desert island, removed from aural stimuli, I would likely go crazy from the incessant loop of that song playing in my head .

"25 years and my life is still, trying to get up that great big hill of hope"... and that bit where they go "oooohh... ohhhohohhohohoooo".
Today I have Informer by Snow in my head.... a nikky boom boom down.

PJ's The Piano. I've been thinking about my grandma a lot these days and the words "oh god I miss you" keep replaying over and over again in my mind.
