The new thread-circle "Song of the week" in the Tori Amos section inspired me to start an "Animal of the Week" thread. Every week we can discuss a different animal and share funny, weird or cute pics and stories about them. Since we already have so many cat thread (I know, I know, there can never be enough, but anyway..) I won't chose cats. So let's start. This weeks animal is.... The Peacock Click on "peacock" Only the male are the colourful ones. And they know how pretty they are. ;D I love watching them.

When I was small I always wanted to see a peacock in real life, because of my different eyecolours (green and blue) my Grandmother always called me "my little peacock". So my mother took me to the biggest graveyard of Vienna (Zentralfriedhof), because there are lots of animals running free and sometimes you can also see peacocks. After one hour (I was very small, maybe it was just 5 minutes ) my mother pointed on a small gray/brownish bird telling me that's a peacock. No way, such a "boring" animals. ;D That was pretty disentchanting for the ickle Julia. It took me two more years till I saw a male one in the zoo.

Only the male are the colourful ones. Ha! Take that females! My mum once saw a psychic who asked her if we had any peacock feathers in the house. She said if we did then we must get rid of them, and to throw them away rather than give them to anyone else. Apparently "peacocks are evil, and their feathers have the 'evil eye' upon them". They bring bad luck into any house their feathers are placed. Er. Yeh. O kay... :sus:

hey Alamo, that's a great thread-idea! karma is on its way to you Only the male are the colourful ones. Ha! Take that females! yeah, but guess what all those shiny, colorful feathers are there for.....-->just to impress the ladies!! "A peacock feather has an evil eye at the end. Argus, the Greek legend, says a hundred eyed monster was turned into a peacock with all it's eyes in it's tail." (Quote from oldsuperstitions.com) well anyway, I think "peacock=evil" belongs in the same category as "black cat=bad luck" so I'll just ignore it and keep my peacock feathers (furthermore: a lot of sites say peacock feathers bring bad luck for ACTORS...so as I'm not an actor, they shouldn't be dangerous to me ;D) There are also white peacocks: they lack the brilliant colors, but I kinda like their ghost-like appearance

GREAT idea, girlfriend. I don't think I've ever told this story... but about 9 years ago, my mum and I looked after a peacock of people in our street [who were on holiday]. They have all sorts of animals. It was summer and it was warm like hell. Their male peacock had run away and got hit by a car and broke his leg. [Very bad] By miracle he found his way home limping. They could catch him and look at it. They called a vet and he said not much could be done... that it was better to put him down. But this woman insisted to not put him down and try to look after him. So she started cleaning the wound and put bandages around it. Now, since short after they had to leave for a vacation, they couldn't leave the poor one like that, so she asked my mum if she could clean his bandage every day. So I went with my mum every day. The wound smelled like nothing I've ever smelled in my life. Just horrible and the flies loved to hang around it. So we had to clean it twice a day, since it was so warm. But miracly he jumped around on one leg and was otherwise very lively. No infection. So we kept going for the two weeks and the wound improved. We checked up on him a few times a month when the people returned and you won't believe this, but this peacock walked around on his both legs, tho limping. And he is still alive TODAY!! Can you believe that?! This bird is like more then 10 years old. So this won't surprise you, that I absolutely love & respect peacocks. They're one of a kind.

Oh and he was really calm while we had to 'work' on him... it's like he knew we were helping him. Pretty intense and bizarre! And I LOVE that white peacock... wow, didn't know.

When I was a child, or should I say when I was younger... I was obsessed with birds and especially with peacocks. The colours and shapes just enchanted me and I could spent hours and hours just looking at the pictures in my animal books. My world turned around when my dad brought home two peacock feathers. But that, I guess, now explains the downhill of my life...
