I bet you all have heard of H.G. Wells' novel The War Of The Worlds. It's a fantastic SF-novel. In the 1930s there was a hearing game on the radio, which terrified a whole lot of people, who believed it was real! In 1953 they made a great movie out of it, rather true to the original story. Then in 1978 Jeff Wayne made a double album with terrifying sounds and fantastic music. It's like narrating the story over sf/keyboard/computer-music. We all have heard the hitsingle "The Eve Of The War". members.aol.com/skyyeyes/jwwow.htmLast year there came this story of Steven Spielberg who was planning to make a new, sfx-movie of War Of The Worlds, true to the original novel. But today I watched the website www.waroftheworlds.com and viewed the trailers of this movie, featuring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning. But what the heck??? The setting is the 21st century USA, and not late 1800s England. Even the story has been re-written.... As a long time WOTW-fan it feels like a big disappointment coming up, but it also looks like a big blockbuster spectacle! So I've got mixed feelings about this one. Late June we will found out....

well it kind of makes sense - speilburg is very futuristic. and just changing the setting shouldn't change the meaning of the story at all, just the time setting so more people relate to it probably

Dunno if any of you read SFX magazine, but someone wrote a letter to them this month about how it was right that they were setting the new version in the present/near-future. They made some damn good points and made a lot of sense to be honest...

It's with Tom Cruise indeed. I think he's a fantastic actor, esp. in movies such as Top Gun, Cocktail, Magnolia (!!!), Minority Report and Collatteral.
