I loved the movie. It has a dark feel to it, with a bit of nostalgia coz the machines looked a bit old-fashioned sci-fi which was refreshing.

Well i can see i am a month behind on this topic...but anyhoos...
I LOVED the movie. I love the old H.G. Wells story - and still enjoyed the movie. Just as Andrew said - don't go to it expecting a direct from book to sceen transformation. That wouldn't be believeable in todays modern set world. But i believe it is startling because of the themes that are issued - yes the world is completely f*cked by these aliens - but some of the true enemies the characters face are their fellow human beings - push comes to shove so to speak - these are the issues i think spielburg was trying to confront in this movie and he accomplished it beautifully i believe.

Yes exactly! Pitty about that one soppy moment right before the credits roll - i know some people found it a wrong note to end on (and i do agree with that criticism, it's the one and only predictable thing in the film and i'd have almost have rather not known the outcome for those characters [i'm still trying to keep vague since i know some people who could read this didn't see the film in the cinema, and don't want to ruin it for them when they do finally see it ]). But overall, a great film. And as recent events in the real world have gone on to show all too well, realistic in it's portrayal of how humans have a habbit of becoming their own worst enemies in so many horrible ways whenever their lives are in real danger.
