Who has see it? Teppic and I went to the cinema yesterday. We were supposed to go see 'Batman Begins', but we were too late and we went for this one instead as we wanted to go see it anyways. I think it was brilliant. I really enjoyed it. It's definately worth to go see it on the big screen, as such type of films need to be seen on a big screen, if you know what I mean? The special effects where amazing! It had a very dark feel to it. Glad I saw it!!

I've heard mixed reviews about it. I was ready to go see it, but my co-workers kinda spoiled it all for me. that and they said that the first half was great, but then on, it was pure shit, but the special effects make it worth it. This is a DVD rental in my opinion

I know and love the book by H.G. Wells and I love the first movie-version from half a century ago. I have the double cd from Jeff Wayne's musical storytelling interpretation and I have the pc game (with JW's music) and I love them all.
But this losely based on the original story by Spielberg and Cruise gives me mixed feelings about it. He shouldn't have called it War Of The Worlds. I'm a big fan of both Spielberg and Cruise, but they shouldn't have touched and altered WOTW. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I guess they shouldn't have changed the original story at all.

I would not even watch this film if you held a weapon to my head. Special effects don't impress me, I saw some clips from the film, they made a special about it on ARTE and I swear I'd be in agony if I had to watch the whole movie in a cinema on a big screen. But I am glad you enjoyed it.

ugh. more than mixed feelings. i won't go as far as saying it sucked major ass but it's close. i didn't like it sorry apart from the alien action, the rest of the movie is so dull it hurts. boring dialogues. the kids definitely deserved some spanking, same for Tom Cruise. i couldn't help thinking about The Tripods though (the brits should know this BBC show from the 80's). i used to watch it on a french tv channel when i was 9 i think, and it litterally scared the shit out of me. hearing the theme song gave me goosebumps. they didn't have the same special effects as Spielberg, but whatever, it was still good. btw Charlie and The Chocolate Factory ROCKS!

I wanna see it so much. Even though I think Tom Cruise is a total wack-job. I won't let that get in the way tho.

Like I said, I saw a special about it on ARTE, for an hour, and I can say frankly that I don't want to see this movie. I don't like Tom Cruise and for me this film is much to aggressive. I get headaches from suchs films. I don't understand why it makes you feel down when I don't want to see this film, I didn't say it is wrong or stupid to watch it, I don't want to spend my time watching it. But like I said, I am glad you liked it and you enjoyed watching it with Andrew.

Can you enjoy the movie too, when you read the book, seen the 1953 movie and know and love the Jeff Wayne's musical version for years??? This WOTW is almost totally different. It's a "roughly based on..." movie I guess. Hardly any H.G. Wells

Franklin, maybe go and watch it and then you'll know if you think it's any good... If you went to see it without thinking "I'm going seeing War of the Worlds", then i think you'll be at least a little pleasantly surprised. If you can't disconnect it from the source material in your mind then try to look at it this way... The original story is set in what was the present time when the book was written, and so in many ways it's more true to the original story for the film to be set in the present time right now. It's not a re-make of any past film version, but rather a whole new film based upon the ideas set out in the original story. Taken on it's own it's also a very intelligently made film, knowing what to show when and most importantly what not to show the audience. It's that rare thing; a hollywood blockbuster which knows that sometimes resisting inserting a 10 minute CGI sequence can actually make a movie better. Not that the film doesn't have some huge CGI set pieces (infact it does, and to really appreciate them you need to see then on the big screen), it's just they aren't overused. If you do eventually see it, then i think regardless of if you like the way the story is portrayed that you'll understand what i'm trying to say regarding it's use of special effects. I'll be honest, whilst i'm a huge sci-fi fan i've never been hugely driven towards War of the Worlds in it's various forms. I'm also not a huge Spielberg fan either. When i went to see this film i expected the usual CGI overload of almost every big hollywood sci-fi film these days, along with perhaps some sickeningly cute stuff that Spielberg sometimes sticks in his films. I pretty much went there to turn my brain off and enjoy the carnage. But what i actually saw was far above my expectations... At times the film can become very dark in ways you'd never expect from any hollywood blockbuster (to say much more would ruin things). This is not the Spielberg that made ET, even if the cute little girl may trick you into thinking it could be (indeed, i think going in possibly expecting this makes the film have an even greater impact). Is it an exact re-telling of the original story? No, it's not. What it is, is a wonderfully directed adult science fiction film that stays true to the original themes whilst placing itself firmly in the modern world. It's the type of film that a hollywood blockbuster should be. The only reason i can think why anyone with a love of proper science fiction wouldn't go see this film is if they couldn't stand Tom Cruise (who incidentally puts in one of the best acting jobs i've seen him perform). And there's only one very small plot hole that i can think of too (and even that's more of a side note than anything that affects the main plot) - another rare thing for a hollywood film. Those are my thoughts anyhow. I obviously liked the film or i wouldn't have spent so long typing all this...
