So my brother has started working part time for Apollo - the video rental place. Perk of the job is he gets to take out up to 3 movies a day free of charge I don't quite have the time to watch that many but we are indeed taking as much avantage of this perk as we can! I mentioned The Machinist, I've also recently seen Constantine, Spider-man 2, Memento and Panic Room, and on Friday we rented American Splendour, X-Men 2 and Garden State which I'll watch in the next couple of days. So anyway, as I've now got this opportunity I wondered if some Afterglowers would recommend me some films that I really should see? Sometimes it's like wading through a sea of crap to get to the good ones!

Hellboy's a good turn-your-brain-off action film with some very good humour. I think you'll like it. It seemed to slip most people by in this part of the world due to it having such a badly delayed release outside of the US.
Cube is a small budget independent film, made by some guys just out of filmschool. It's one of those films where the small budget actually seemed to help the creativity of the writers. Well worth watching - just (as i've mentioned in another thread recently already) don't pick up either of the two sequels by accident, because they aren't half the film that the original was.
Since i had to cross off a name i'll add a new one... Cypher. It was the next film made by the director of Cube, and whilst i personally don't think it's quite as good it's still a very good film. In some ways it also has a bit in common with Memento and those "I don't quite know who i am" type films, but it's set in the future.

Don't make the mistake of picking up Cube:Zero thinking it's the first film either... It was on the Sci-Fi Channel last week, and what a load of shiiiiiite. Oh how the writer/director of the original film must have wept.

I saw a mini-documentry on the guy who made this film.. wow. The penguins are just beautiful creatures and moreso parents. They strike a great balance and are so caring. Each knows it's role within the little family unit... so great. I'm gonna look out for this film too

Cube is superb, Cube Zero is a big pile of shit indeed. I think Memento is ok. Want to see Hellboy too!
After Hellboy, you must see Underword and Van Helsing too.
And after Cube you have to watch Saw.
And some totally different: Man On The Moon (Jim Carrey). Superb!!

I did see Saw a while ago and I thought it was really good Underworld and Van Helsing got some pretty bad reviews - not that I'm that bothered about film critics but it seemed fairly conistent opinion. Despite this I'd still quite like to watch them. Not just for Kate Beckinsale but I do like a trashy Vampire flick now and then anyway... Watched Lost Boys the other night actually. Never seen it before - I thought it was good fun. My bro's video shop doesn't seem to have Cube or Cypher Might see if I can download them from somewhere instead. Also, I like penguins...

Underworld and Van Helsing aren't as bad as some (well i say some, prolly should say most...lol) reviewers have made out. Tho seeing them in the same sentence as Hellboy almost made me spaz out (the only sentence those words work together in for me is something like "Hellboy shits all over Underworld and Van Helsing in terms of... well, everything!" ). Underworld is a film with much more potential than the film it ended up being. I didn't hate it by any means, i was just disappointed that it didn't live up to my expectations. Maybe the next films in the series will, if they ever get made. If you haven't seen the trailers and go in without expectations, i think you'll come away having enjoyed a decent action film (but holy shit how those trailers promised so much more!). And besides, Kate Beckinsale in skin tight PVC goth gear...! :tep: Van Helsing you may have to go into with even less expectations tho. Think super-dumb action film. Think sometimes so bad it's good. ;D Tho in fairness i think what went over some reviewers heads was that it was supposed to be like that in places. I mean it's so outrageously silly most of the time - you can see the actors struggling not to burst out laughing! It's a dumb action comedy, and taken at that level it's entertaining enough to pass it's running time. Just don't try watching it on a day when you feel like watching something that has half a brain. Other films: 'Collateral' is a good little thriller. And speaking of Tom Cruise films i'd also recommend 'The Last Samurai' - it's long, but i really enjoyed it. Have you seen 'Shaun of the Dead' yet? That's a fantastic english comedy with loads of little in-jokes to spot. And if you're in the mood for something with a brain and not a lot of action, try 'K-Pax'. It's a Kevin Spacey film about a psychiatrist who is introduced to a patient who believes they're from the planet K-Pax. Jeff Bridges plays the psychiatrist, while Spacey is the alien/patient. 'Phone Booth' is short straight-to-the-point little action thriller that's well worth seeing. And finally an older film that's one of my faves and is just damn cool is 'Ghost Dog'... You should probably look it up on IMDB for a description tho, cos it's a bit hard to describe (sounds like it could be full of action, but in reality it's a film that has it's own slow yet deliberate pace).

Thanks Teppic. I think how you've described Underworld and Van Helsing sounds like they will be pretty much what I'm expecting and that's ok since I'm all for a bit of a silly fantasy/action film now and then. Although... I do prefer if a scriptwriter/director can combine the fun action parts with a strong plot and well developed characters. I've noticed your Batman Begins sig and this is a film I've been really looking forward to seeing as I'm hoping it manages to do the aforementioned. I didn't get around to watching it at the cinema and I've deliberately tried to avoid seeing clips or trailers. Anyway, I think it will be on DVD pretty soon Well I have seen Collateral, I forgot to mention it in my list but I liked it a lot! Last Samurai I hope to watch sometime in the next few weeks. Tom Cruise is actually doing quite a lot of decent films lately. Also seen K-PAX ages ago. I think that was a movie that got very mixed reviews. I enjoyed it myself... though I remember thinking the story was a bit vague Shaun of the Dead? Yep, seen that too! Is this getting annoying yet? On this theme, I finally got around to watching Spaced for the first time. We've been leant the DVD's of the first & second series so I'm just discovering it now. Also catching up on some of Black Books... Btw did anyone watch Love Soup? That new sort of black comedy (I'm talking tv not film now btw)with Tamsin Greig (Also in Shaun of the Dead, Black Books etc). I caught it about a quarter of the way through and I thought it was hilarious in parts. Rough synopsis on IMDB www.imdb.com/title/tt0443390/.

Yeh, Batman Begins should be out on dvd pretty soon (it's due for a retail release shortly at least). It definitely is the best super hero film full stop. It just gets everything so right. And i won't say anything else about it cos i don't want to ruin anything for you. You'll like it, i'm sure.
