Finally saw Cube! It was on Channel 5 the other night. I did enjoy it and thought it was quite original. The only thing that let it down for me was that the personalities of the characters were all a bit exaggerated. That cop was a headcase! Overall though, it was good and certainly much better than half the generic crap around! Okay, i only just saw this today. Right, well now no matter how tempted DON'T watch the sequels! Especially if you found the personalities of the characters in the first film a little exaggerated... I do know what you mean about the personalities, tho i think it's partly due to the film having to be a bit short since it was very much a student film made with 'proper actors'. The personalities become so exaggerated because they've supposedly been in there for so long that their bodies are beginning to shut down and their darker personality-traits are showing themselves (as is all too common when a group of people are put into hopeless situations). I actually really liked the way the actor played the cop, tho it's very obvious that they could only afford tv level actors rather than movie actors. Loved the ending tho (won't say anything in case someone reads this and then sees the film only to remember what i've said ) - it was a brave decision, and one that the sequels completely failed to understand and so ruined. Now you need to try Cypher, by the same director (still working on limited funds alas, so prepare to laugh at badly CGI'ed helicopters... ). Oh, and a film completely unrelated that everyone should see at least once in their life: Bubba Ho-Tep! After you've seen it you'll be saying "Thank'yaaa... Thank'yaaa verrry much!". ;D *Adds Cypher and Bubba Ho-Tep to mental list of films to watch* * looks forward to badly CGI'ed helicopters* ;D

it's been a while since i have seen it, but i really like cube. i dont remember much of the sequel because i never finished it. i actually remember watch it with some people and having to turn it off because it wasnt nearly as good as the first. i like how in the original, they never really explained how they got in to the cube, or really even who did it to them. i can only guess that in the sequels they try to answer those questions. but for the sake of the original, i believe in some movies things are best left to the imagination

Well... Kind'a. Cube 2 is pretty much a repeat of Cube but with a bit more money spent on it. It's not outright awful, but has a different twist at the end which takes you outside the cube for a few moments and so hints at what the cube is for. But despite the higher budget sets it doesn't have the same atmosphere as the first, is way too similar in what happens, the twist at the end isn't really needed, and the final nail in the coffin is that in trying to show what's outside it ruins the whole point of the original film's ending. I've actually watched Cube 2 a couple of times on tv, and it's good enough that if you didn't pay money it passes an hour and a half with your brain set to 'off' (but of course that shows how they missed the point of the first film, since that gave you lots to think about). Basically it's exactly what you'd expect from an unofficial sequel that was churned out to cash in on the cult status of the original. Cube Zero (ie. Cube 3) is a whole different matter. Most of the movie is set outside the cube! It was an interesting decision for them to make as it obviously put a huge amount of pressure upon the writers. The problem was that the writers were hopeless! The world they created outside the cube was just such a hack sci-fi job... They obviously just sat through a few cheap-ass sci-fi dvds and created a future earth which wouldn't have stood up in a late 1990's episode of The Outer Limits! And the only way they could think of to fit the whole cube concept into their film was to reveal it to be a 'futuristic prison'. Groaaaan. And yeh i know i'm normally the first person to usually shout at someone for posting any spoilers, but they just state it's a prison from the very beginning of the film - no big twist, nothing. It's like an potentially interesting but very bad episode of the tv series First Wave (and if you ever bothered to watch that to the end you'll know just how bad i'm talking! ). They could have removed the cube from the story completely and it wouldn't have affected the movie one bit. And to make matters worse they even make an awful attempt to tie the film in with the original Cube at the very end, by - get this - repeating the ending of the first film almost note for note. And i mean literally repeating the ending, almost scene for scene! Except this time you see outside the cube again (and it's completely different from the second film, which they obviously decided to ignore completely). Seriously, save your sanity and avoid like the plague! ;D Cube is a great film that was never written with sequels in mind. It's a stand alone, great little student true science fiction film that showed it's creator to be a talent to watch out for in the future. The second film was a slight insult to the idea of the the original. The third is an utter mess. Some films just aren't meant to have sequels (and it's telling that the director's following film Cypher, hasn't had one - i get the feeling he learned hollywood will attach themselves like parasites to anything remotely decent until they drain it of all credibility if you give it half the chance). Anyway... *Rant mode off. ;D
