Does anyone prefer American Dad over Family Guy? I don't, I'm a Family Guy girl through and through. I've just got Season 2 of American Dad out from the video store and while I think it's funny and I want to marry Rodger, it just doesn't cut it against Family Guy.
What do you guys think>?
p.s. Enjoy it while you can Matt... my holidays only last another three days! I hope you're not like getting told off or anything...
Reason for Editing: Hayley: (looks at Roger's films) Porky's? Meatballs 2? Enjoy your crapfest! Roger: Oh, go read The Bell Jar, you poser!

No competition. Family Guy wins hands down. While I enjoy watching American Dad, I sometimes feel it tries too hard. I agree though, Roger is the best damn thing about the show. I love the flamboyantly drunken alien!

My opinion on this is complicated. While Family Guy has by far the greater number of really funny episodes over its run, I can't help but think that American Dad was the more consistent show last season. I still think that Family Guy still has the best individual episodes, but has become a bit hit or miss as it ages. It reminds me a bit of South Park in the middle years. When the fun of the first few seasons was over and the writers got a little stale at times, but still had absolutely genius moments. And yes, Roger is my favorite character on either show... Kelli: Haha, back to reality huh?! I make my own hours, but unfortunately I've been making like 12-14 of them a day lately . It's always nice to come here on a tea break and talk about the simple things I liked to do before the insanity started like--watch Family Guy . (But I have our Tori and all my other music at my office to keep me sane)

Yeah, Family Guy, I was just watching it while I ate my dinner. IT was the one where Peter finds out he is "mentally challenged"
I actaully really dislike American Dad, but my mum sometimes watches it. Roger is amusing, and was funny when he had his "reproductive cycle" and they used the ooze in the potato salad.

Just saw a commercial for the Star Wars episode of Family Guy--looks awesome! I can't wait as a Family Guy fan and kid raised on the original Star Wars films!

I prefer Family Guy, too....but American Dad still has great writing! I think it's because I prefer the characters in Family Guy....though Roger and Stan are hilarious.

Re: comparison b/w mid-South Park and Family Guy.
Yeah. I totally get that. mid-South Park still had moments of greatness... like the Crips vs. Bloods ep, the Maury Povitch one, towlie, and the Scott Tenorman ep, but generally seasons 3-7 were quite tenuous at best. Remember the Jakovasaurus? Super Best Friends? Krazy Kripples? Free Hat? When Kenny stays dead? When South Park turns gay? I mean those seasons have some of my most favourite moments (not whole episodes), but they just don't grab me as much as say the last 4 seasons have.
Family Guy has great moments, great lines, great characters, etc. but is kinda lacking as a whole. Kinda like The Simpsons now as opposed to the first say, 10 years, before it TRUELY became carnivalesque. Maybe it's just me and I have a longer attention span from reading all those books so I can tell the difference, but perhaps I'm too cynical! But it still beats American Dad.

I saw my favourite Family Guy line last night:
Francine: Stupid George Clooney, stop playing basketball and get married like everyone else!
and Francine: Poor Rodger. He's probably up in heaven bumming smokes off Jesus. (I want this on my epitaph. With the 'he' into 'she', obviously) and
Steve: Don't you have any feelings?! Stan: Son, feelings are what women have. They come from their ovaries. Steve: You're a monster! I have no father! Stan: I'm not a monster.

Well the star wars episode was mostly a disappointment. The end was great though, because Chris was asking why they did exactly what Robot Chicken did 3 months ago (Chris is voiced by Seth Green who is the creator/producer of Robot Chicken). And Peter (who is voiced by the creator of Family Guy) was making fun of Robot Chicken because nobody watches it ;D.

Then again, I ABSOLUTELY hate Star Wars and have yet to sit through one whole movie ;D I missed the Robot Chicken version though! Dammit! How'd they do it? Was it still 15 minutes long?

I think that I have let my standards become unrealistically high for Family Guy. My main complaint with this show was how closely it followed the Star Wars plot line at points, and holding to the plot put a damper on things for me. I know that plot all too well since I'm an American male in my late 20s, I was raised by the original Star Wars films (total dork), The Robot Chicken Star Wars ep was twice as long as normal as well (30 mins). It was viewable on the website for a while, but they seem to have taken it down. I'm sure you'll have plenty of chances to catch a replay, Adult Swim loves to show the same stuff over and over ;D.

Really? They do? I watch Adult Swim daily(or should I say, nightly) and I hardly ever catch any repeats. These repeats must happen on weekends when I'm not home then ;D I thought the animation was amazing. I think, ok, that despite them sticking to the original plot(which I think was kind of the point) captured the feel of the movie perfectly. Stewie as Darth Vader(is that his name?) was simply delicious and oh so cute! Peter as Hans Solo was awesome. ( the couch!) So many great moments. I enjoyed it thoroughly and cant wait to see it again. I'll definitely have to keep an eye out for that Robot Chicken version though.

Yup, the adult swim seasons are really short so they pretty much run each episode at least twice on the Sunday slot (although they have a ton of different shows now, so maybe that changed). I think I have seen the bizzaro episode of Sealab about 10 times at this point (although that is an absolute classic, and I think Sealab is completely off the schedule now, but thankfully there are DVDs!). Saturday used to be all Anime, which I don't care for, but I don't know if that is still the case. I'm rarely watching TV at those times.
I guess my criticism is very nitpickey. That is the fundamental conundrum of the spoof right? How much time do you spend staying on target with the source material and how much time is spent on the actual comedy. The couch was the best part for me as well, and also was the biggest left turn plot-wise.
Yes I'm spending way too much time analyzing a cartoon. I'm only a couple years removed from giving up on my dream job as a screenwriter, and I have a bad habit of analyzing movies/TV shows instead of...you know...enjoying them.
