Here are the words and my interpretation to a song entitled “Holiday” By Green Day. (This song is Currently Ranked at Number-192 on my Top-1250 Song List. You can see the entire song List on this same Mr. Microphone" Forum.
Hear the sound of the falling rain
Coming down like an Armageddon flame (The Shame)
The ones who died without a name
The very first lines talking about Bush’s war in Iraq.
Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called faith and misery
And bleed –The company lost the war today
The next of lines that read “Hear the dogs howling out of key to a hymn called faith and misery” is talking about how Bush and his promoters (referred to as the Dogs) hypocritically try to make a claim of being Religious ( e.g., howling out of key (Being a Hypocrite) to a HYMN called FAITH AND MISERY. (The misery being what Bush is doing to country, while acting like he is a man of God) The lines that read, “and Bleed – The COMPANY lost the War today” is referring to the fact that any loss for our side, even for one day, is really a loss for the Rich Oil companies, which is what they perceive the War in Iraq as truly being about.
(Now they go into the chorus)
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
On Holiday
Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protester has crossed the line
Only to find the money’s on the other side
The lines that read, “Hear The Drums pounding out of time, another protestor has crossed the line, only to finds the money on the other side” This is talking about how the Bush Administration is so quick to try and control anyone from exercising their right to protest, by constantly using the fact that we are at war, and that any protest merely serves to provide aid and comfort to the enemy. Also, the money being on the other side is a reference to the fact that the wealthiest people in our country are the only ones the Bush administration actually cares about; while it is primarily the children of the poor who are in the Military
Can I get another Amen
There’s a flag wrapped around a score of men (A Gag)
A Plastic Bag for a monument
(This meaning is clear on its face)
The Representative of California has the floor
(Now they go into a totally different mode and the lead singer starts shouting)
Zieg Heil to the President gasman
Bombs away is your punishment
Pulverize the Eiffel towers
Who criticize your Government
“Zieg Hiel to the President gasman” (A subtle reference to connect President Bush Tactics, as being synonymous with those of the Nazi regime in world War II.)
Then the lines “Bomb’s Away is your punishment Pulverize the Eiffel Towers, who criticize your government” is talking about how the Bush Administration is always so quick and ready to drop bombs on any country he doesn’t like” and on how Bush and his supporters are all too willing to stifle criticism from France or anyone else, by using sanctions, expressing outrage, and through subtle intimidation.
Bang Bang goes the broken glass
Kill all the fags that don’t agree
Trials by fire setting fire
Is not a way that’s meant for me
Just because, because were outlaws yeah
Clearly attacking The Bush'sadministration's criticism of those who "dare" to voice disagreement as being unpatriotic. The reference to Fags is also being used pejoratively against Bush and his supporters who are against Gay rights. Trails By fire Setting Fire, meaning an eye for an ey and tooth for a tooth, IS NOT A WAY THAT MEANT FOR THEM.
(Now they go back to chorus and end the song as follows):
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
This is our lives on Holiday.
The portion of the chorus line that says, “This is the dawning of the rest of our lives, on Holiday” is saying that as long as the American people refuse to wake up meaning their minds are still out on a Holiday, this is what we can all look forward to for the rest of our lives.
And of course, the chorus lines “I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies” is self explanatory.
