Who could ever have imagined when Robbie Williams was in Take That, that this fellow would turn out to be the most popular and succesful male solo artist of the past 10 years? As a guy I just hated TT (still hate the music), but it was interesting to follow the solo carreers from former-members from boybands. But RW just catched my interest almost from the beginning, but when "Angels" came out I was a fan! I couldn't imagine why some of his later singles wouldn't become the hitsingle it deserved to be ("Let me entertain you" didn't even made it to the Dutch Top 40 for instance). But month by month his polularity and success grew. No matter what radiostation you put on, you could expect to hear a song by RW every hour! In Great Britain he's even more succesful I believe! And he deserves it. His music is fantastic. He's the Michael Jackson from the 21st century! Exept for one thing: in the States they don't seem to want him! Bad for them, then. With their stupid nigger music! They don't want Tori anymore, or Michael Jackson. Are there any RW-fans over here? Or do you guys hate his music, or just hate him? And what about your parents? Do they like his music? That's what I like to know.

Well, this thread took me by surprise I didn't realise Robbie was that popular outside Britain. Personally I did buy his first few albums (he was kinda my token pop act to prove I didn't spend my entire life listening to Icelandic art-rock ;D.) I've got a bit bored with him now though. It's difficult to understate how popular Robbie is in Britain. I was very much reminded of this at Live 8 - everybody had been there for like 10 hours clapping and cheering a bit, but when Robbie was announced the place went completely nuts. I couldn't see the stage anymore for teenage girls jumping round screaming . In terms of record sales I suspect only Dido and Coldplay are on the same level (U2, maybe.) It's strange you should mentione parents because I was taken aback when my mother bought his Greatest Hits last year - she's not a music fan at all. That being said, Robbie does come from my hometown so he's kind of 'our boy'.

Here in Holland he is mega-popular I can tell you that. His albums since "Swing when you're winning" stay in the album Top 100 chart for at least a year and a half in a row. Even his live album! And he sells out concerts in soccer stadiums!
Songs like "Angels", "She's The One", "Eternity", "The Road To Mandalay", "Something Stupid" and "Feel" are really songs 'our' parents like a lot. 2 years ago when Robbie did these 2 sold out concerts in Amsterdam (50.000 people each show), there where a lot of 'older people' (in there 40s), so not only teenagers and young adults.
He's a kind of a rebel with his heart in the right position. Women AND men love him and his music.
I don't know how popular or successful Robbie is outside the UK and Benelux, but I like to hear that on this board.

~~Just to let you know, I live in the states. I don't like Michael Jackson's music. I don't listen to rap...personally, I think it's crap.
Carry on with your thread....

He's by far my cup of tea nor my parents, that's for sure and I don't like him personally. And I know Teppic hates him.

Over here in the US he isn't well known. BUT I LOVE HIM! He's prolly my favorite male artist. Juanita have you heard Millenium, or Rock Dj? Those are prolly his most well known songs over here. Jessica Simpson covered his song angels. Quite awfully actually. I love his cd, "Sing when your winning". However I never heard songs from take that.

Thank god RW left the band. "Sing When You're Winning" is indeed a great album. For the US-market only the recordcompany released "The Ego Has Landed", a compilation from his first 2 albums. And what do you think of "Swing Then You're Winning" with all those Frank Sinatra songs and alike? Mr. Bojangles, Have You Met Miss Jones etc. It's superb! Could all the Robbie fans please line up... But I also love Pink Floyd. Do I have compensation???
