Does anyone of you like 'gothic' metal bands like Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, The Gathering, After Forever, Autumn, Theatre Of Tragedy, Tristania, Sirenia, Imperia etc?
It's a grey and expanding area where powermetal riffs mixes male grunts with female soprano/opera-voices and theatrical and epical music and choirs. Not all bands mentioned above sound the same (thank god no!). Nightwish (a really really big band in Europe and in homecountry Norway all of their singles are top-5 hits, sometimes even #1 hits!!) is totally different than Dutch band The Gathering (they began as an all male death metal band, but introducing Anneke van Giersbergen as singer and frontwoman (what a voice!) they changed into what they called back than (1996) as fairytale-metal.
This type of metal is also called Beauty And Beast Metal, because of the female angel-like voice and the beasty male grunts. But it's a genre with big developments and changes, so in 5 years from now it sounds just as different than it did 5 years ago, and still being the same genre. That's why it is so great and wonderful to listen to! There is darkness but also a lot of light.

i know (have the albums) of a few u mentioned (The Gathering, After Forever, Autumn, Theatre Of Tragedy, Tristania, Sirenia). i like to listen to them sometimes but it's far from my fave genre. they're all very good musicians if u ask me, i like the sound and all but i can't listen to this kind of music for too long, i never 'fell for it' as i did for other genres. i guess it's great to see these bands play live.and yes these girls have absolutely marvellous voices!

Well, if it isn't your favourite genre, than you have a lot of music from it! And that's a good point!

i got a couple of albums from Within Temptation and The Crüxshadows, thanks to my goth ex-bf. it's nice to listen to, but not really my thing. personnally i'm more into 'classic' goth bands like Siouxsie and The Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Virgin Prunes and of course The Cure...

I love the 'Sisters Of Mercy', 'The Cure', 'The Mission', 'New Models Army' ect. Yeah yeah, I used to be a REAL goth girl. Black finger nails and safety pins in my ears...! I don't like the modern 'gothic-metal' sound...

I wanna see pictures!!!!!! Do you call those bands (classic) goth? I thought they were called "darkwave"! And I don't like to refer The Cure a gothic band. It used to be new wave (I LOVE "Killing An Arab" and "A Forest"!). And I think Evenesence is the ultimate gothic sell-out. The songs are okay, but it became too popular. I don't think they even have anything to do with this gothic metal/beauty and the beast-power metal thing. I wonder what their next album will sound like. The Dutch mega-bands The Gathering and Within Temptation aren't really into gothic anymore.

Sure The Cure are goth - goth is more about a personal style than any particular musical sound. Certainly in the UK they're always described as goths.
Evanescence are a numetal band and always have been - the singer dresses in a goth style, but that's about it.

It used to be new wave (I LOVE "Killing An Arab" and "A Forest"!). for me they are classics indeed... you have to remember all these mouvement names were created by music journalists though. The Cure is always referred as a goth band, although they never called themselves this way. Joy Division has been called goth as well. what is goth anyway? we still don't know where the term comes from and when it started to spread. some say it's 1979, when Siouxsie and The Banshees used the word 'gothic' to describe their album Join Hands. i mean geez, some even call The Doors and The Velvet Underground gothic! the debate is getting pretty insane sometimes. we could talk about this for hours i guess.

I guess when the atmosphere in the music sounds a bit dark and the band dresses black with pale faces, it's called "goth" or "gothic". Well, fine by me, music is all about feelings and emotions.
I'm not into those classicstyle gothic pop/rock style. I prefer the bombastic/epical kind of metal. There's a lot of fantasy and folklore and other kind of storytelling in the music, which makes it very interesting for me. A sort of musical joyride or adventure. No negative stuff like in the classical late70s/early 80s bands.

really?? omg! lol i wanna see pictures too!! I dunno if I have many pictures from this era actually... Need to check. I had this period where NOBODY could take a pic of me. And surprise surprise it was during that era. I have to say that this 'goth' period was very short. ;D I did still (and still do) love the music tho. Ya know, teenagers... ;D
