Nine Inch Nails: Pretty Hate Machine - The production on the disc is much simpler than what Trent would do later. The emotional intensity translates the best of any NIN release IMHO. 20 years later..Trent still hates himself, thinks he's 'fading away', blah blah blah. I wish he'd just kill himself and get it over with, or just admit the whole things a gimmick...a very evil sick fucking gimmick. Yeah, I see where you are coming from here. Trent is a bit of a one trick pony. I do enjoy that one trick though, and like most everything through The Fragile quite a bit. Of Montreal: The Gay Parade - My favorite modern album, I wish Kevin still made music like this. There is such a sense of profound melancholy under the happy poppy exterior. I just picked up "Satanic Panic in the Attic" at the local record store because it looked cool and was used and cheap. Good stuff. I need to get some more stuff by this band, just discovered them. Well you are in for a treat. Discovering the Of Montreal catalog has been an amazing musical journey for me these last few years. I started with Satanic Panic as well, a great entry point. I went for "The Gay Parade" next, and it took a while to adjust to. It seems a very silly album until you really start to dig in, but I found it very rewarding after some time with it. The new one "Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer" is fantastic as well. I would caution against "Coquelicot Asleep in the Poppies: A Variety of Whimsical Verse" as your next read, because it is brilliant, but weird, really weird. One of the most drugged out albums in years. One of my favorites now, but without a frame of reference I would have seen it as complete shit.

OK, since I'm back here I need to add 3 things to my list. I totally ignored my electronic collection:
Front Line Assembly - Tactical Neural Implant: So much of the industrial/EBM music from this era sounds so DATED now. This disc still plays as fresh and chilling as ever.
Orbital - II(The Brown Album) - I hate 99.9% of techno, with these guys as the one exception. Put this on and just try to sit still, I dare you!
Delerium - Karma - It was so shocking to hear Leeb/Fulber making this kind of music, but for a short time it worked. The whole Delerium project is complete crap now, but this is gold...
so that is 17 now I guess. Bookbunny: I guess I am now in complete violation of your rules for this thread...

Yeah, I see where you are coming from here. Trent is a bit of a one trick pony. I do enjoy that one trick though, and like most everything through The Fragile quite a bit. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the guy. Of all places, I heard 'Down in It' on 120 minutes back in...1989, or whenever it first came out, and ran out the next day, bought the album, and was really into it. I lived in the Chicagoland suburbs, and was really, really into the whole industrial/techno movement going on out of Wax Trax with bands like Skinny Puppy, Front 242, and such, and was impressed by the album and by the fact that, like Prince, Trent had done everything himself on the album, and he also gave props to Public Enemy in the linear notes, which happened to be my favorite band at the time. Well, Downward Spiral came and went, and suffice to say, his music just seems like an exercise in self abuse. I can't say I know much about his personal life other then he may've or may've not diddled around w/ Tori, and Marilyn Manson, but that's about it. But after Spiral, I just gave up on him. I was going through a lot of depression and addiction issues with alcohol at the time, and in 97 when I finally got clean and sober, I looked back and just tossed out all the NIN music based on the lyrical content. It's very, very, very dark. I can't find any sort of worth in the lyrical content. Around two months ago I picked up "With Teeth" because it was cheap, and thought I'd give it a shot....anyway, 10 years later from listenting to Trent, or another way of looking at it would be to say 18 years from PHMachine was released..and he's still talking about "I'm alone..I'm fading away..You are someone else, I am still right here..I just made you up to hurt myself....There is no you, ..." Give it up already. Is he really that f**ked in the head, or is it just a gimmick to get the teen angst/depressed kiddies to buy his stuff because "Ooooh, he's edgy and deep..and his band is named after the length of nails used to kill Jesus..plus he used to hang with Marilyn Manson who was ordained a Satanic Priest by Anton Lavey?!"...On the musical side though, his stuff is very, very, very good. Especially the usage of the Piano, but...I don't know what to say. It's a very confusing love/hate relationship I have with his music. I think I take music too seriously. If I was religious I'd say it's a religious experience, but I'm not so... Well you are in for a treat. Discovering the Of Montreal catalog has been an amazing musical journey for me these last few years. I started with Satanic Panic as well, a great entry point. One of the most drugged out albums in years. One of my favorites now, but without a frame of reference I would have seen it as complete shit. Sounds like good stuff. I've been a fan of psychedelic music since a kid with The Beatles period from Revolver - White Album..onto the Doors stuff, Psychic TV, and the like, and techno stuff by bands like Orb and whatever, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it. [/quote] Yeah Of Montreal has a very interesting combination of sounds in the mix. The electronic dance elements are actually quite a recent development. Initially Kevin and crew made simple little lo-fi pop songs that had obvious but hard to classify 60s garage rock influences. The debut, Cherry Peel is definitely worth a listen, there are some real pop gems on there. Progressively the sound morphed into a psychedelic approach much in the vein of Pet Sounds or Sgt.Peppers . Coquelicot was probably the creative peak, it is really hard to describe in words how strange this album is put together--without a doubt some of the weirdest lyrics anyone has ever come up with. By Satanic we had the electronic influences and the formula for the modern Of Montreal. The latest album is quite striking because the lyrics are incredibly personal, dark and depressing-but the music maintains the poppy sunshine happy day feel. That has always been an Of Montreal trademark, but it is quite extreme on Hissing Fauna. Rumors about the album currently in progress for '08 sounds like a return to square one with simple little pop songs, with a twist, no song over 50 seconds long! A fun little Of Montreal fact for you. That Outback steakhouse commercial that is always on TV. With the song: "I'm going to outback tonight." That is actually an Of Montreal song called "Wraith Pined to the Mist and Other Games." They changed the lyrics and turned it into a restaurant jingle. For your reference, this is how the original Of Montreal sounded: www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyuNjGfWvPU

9. Moon Safari (Air) ties with Virgin Suicides Soundtrack (Air) Moon Safari just missed my top ten, and the Virgin Suicides Score is amazing music for a great film. 12. Extraordinary Machine (Fiona Apple) So are you referring to the version they put out on CD last year, or the version that was leaked in '04?

^ I so prefer the leaked album. My god. Fiona Apple should have never stopped working with Jon Brion. Although it does polish some songs, like O'Sailor and Not About Love, it totally cuts the heart out of Red Red Red and the other songs. Worst mistake ever.
^ I feel exactly the same way about Trent Reznor. I loved PHM/Downward Spiral/ Fragile (the double CD of masturbatory "pain") when it first heard it, but now its phhhfttt. Get over it man. Get some therapy. Although I do believe that Wish is the best song he has ever written. Ever.

Orbital - II(The Brown Album) - I hate 99.9% of techno, with these guys as the one exception. Put this on and just try to sit still, I dare you! AYE!!! You are spot on here. This album is a great one. Granted, I am biased being a DJ and all into many of the subgenres of electronica. Suffice it to say though, that this album does tend to get stuck in the player. If you are new to the electronique sounds or want to have a taste, this is a fine place to start. Great great stuff.

That's the only one I have by them, and I like that intro, but the rest of the CD isn't really my bag of techno...just remove the last three letters and now we're talking.

Yup that's the one...good ole lieutenant Worf getting sampled.

I wasn't sure if it was Worf or Sisko. I figured Sisko simpy because I can't picture Worf talking about time manipulation/travel when Sisko was the one jumping around Wormholes explaining linear time to the prophets in the first episode.

That is what made Orbital so cool, their commitment to the album as the ultimate form of expression. I don't know of many electronic artists that feel that way. There were some amazing club mixes of the stuff, but those albums...yum Hmm...responding to a message from a month ago? Yup I'm being a bad forum member and bumping this thread, too important to fall off the first page.

I'll try this, but I'm not even going to try to put them in any order:
1) Boys for Pele from Tori 2) Under the Pink from Tori 3) The White Album from the Beatles 4) O from Damien Rice 5) Elephant from the White Stripes 6) Good News for People Who Love Bad News from Modest Mouse 7) I am Sam Soundtrack 8) Let it Be from the Beatles 9) Crash from the Dave Matthews Band 10) Love is Hell from Ryan Adams
I can't believe you mentioned this one! I too loved this soundtrack but had it on cassette and have never replaced it in CD version and God only knows where that cassette is now. I had wondered before if Laura Palmer was your real name or if you were a Twin Peaks fan.
Can't believe this little band was mentioned either! I saw them a few months ago when they came to town. I had never heard of them before that, but won tickets to the show on a local radio station.

8) Let it Be from the Beatles Yay! so under appreciated (when compared to the other Beatles records I mean). Have you heard the new de-Spectorized version? It is so weird after having grown up on the original. Two of Us is one of my all time favorite songs...and I did like the Aimee Mann and Michael Penn cover on the I am Sam soundtrack. Of Montreal is amazing, but I wish they played their old stuff live. Back in 97-01 there was no one better...
